About the Author

Al Arens, founding author of this textbook, was the PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor of Accounting Emeritus at Michigan State University. In addition to writing books on auditing, he was a coauthor of computerized accounting supplements and he was actively involved in the continuing education of practitioners with local and regional CPA firms. Al was a past president of the American Accounting Association and a former member of the AICPA Auditing Standards Board. He practiced public accounting with both a local CPA firm and the predecessor firm to Ernst & Young. He received many awards including the AAA Auditing Section Outstanding Educator award, the AICPA Outstanding Educator award, the national Beta Alpha Psi Professor of the Year award, and many teaching and other awards at Michigan State.

Randy Elder, who has served as a coauthor of this textbook since the 8th edition, is Professor of Accounting at Syracuse University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate auditing courses, and has received several teaching awards. His research focuses on audit quality and current audit firm practices and he served as the team leader for American Accounting Association Auditing Section PCAOB research synthesis teams on audit confirmations and audit sampling. He has extensive public accounting experience with a large regional CPA firm, frequently teaches continuing education for a large international CPA firm, and is a member of the AICPA and Michigan Association of CPAs.

Mark S. Beasley, who has also served as a coauthor of this textbook since the 8th edition, is the Deloitte Professor of Enterprise Risk Management and Professor of Accounting at North Carolina State University. He has taught undergraduate and graduate auditing courses, and has received several teaching awards including membership in NC State’s Academy of Outstanding Teachers. He has extensive professional audit experience with the predecessor firm to Ernst & Young and has extensive standards-setting experience working with the Auditing Standards Board as a Technical Manager in the Audit and Assurance Division of the AICPA. He served on the ASB Fraud Standard Task Force responsible for developing SAS 99, the ASB Antifraud Programs and Controls Task Force, and the Advisory Council overseeing the COSO Enterprise Risk Management Framework project. He recently completed over seven years of service as a member of the COSO Board, representing the AAA.

Chris Hogan is a Professor of Accounting in the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. We are thrilled to continue the Michigan State connection started by Al Arens. Chris teaches a graduate auditing course and her research focuses on internal controls and integrated audits, audit firm client portfolios, and the impact of regulation on audit markets. Chris has auditing experience with Price Waterhouse, one of the predecessor firms to PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. She has served in multiple leadership roles within the American Accounting Association, including serving as President of the Auditing Section and on the Audit Committee of the AAA.

The Global paperback is almost like the hardback.

I got the global paperback version with the birds on it. It is mostly like US hardback edition except the questions in the back of the chapter is different. What I do is borrow a friends book, scan the questions with my phone, and then I'm all good to go with homework. If you can do that you'll save some money.

Wonderful way to have conversations with kids about feelings and coping skills!

I work as a counselor in public schools and am a mom to a 4 year old girl. I have read this book with children from 4-11 years old and every child has been engaged and interested in the story. The interventions throughout the book really get the kids involved in conversation about the concepts of feelings and sensations, both when they are calm and after getting a little dysregulated (from jumping, wiggling and rubbing hands together). A fantastic way to start conversations about these very important concepts!

Poor Illustrations and way too wordy

This book means well but is really poorly designed. The illustrations are basically the same boy on every page, with expressions that are not that expressive. The book is WAY too wordy and not at all engaging. Not something your kid will want to reread and reread AT ALL.

I also got My Incredible Talking Body and the illustrations and text is more suited to little kids (3-5yo). I also have some issues with that book but it is soooo much better than this one.

Did nothing for me

I really hate to be the only one here with a bad review. I actually waited forever to review this because I thought maybe something was just wrong with me since so many other readers found the book so useful. All I can say is apparently my lower brain or "animal" brain is still winning because the ideas presented in this book did nothing for me.
I'm giving the book two stars instead of one simply because at the very least she's trying to say something different here. This isn't rehashing the same old same old so for that I give her credit. I also feel like the author really wants to help people not just sell something and that is a refreshing change as well.

For me though the book can be boiled down to this...you really don't need to binge just tell yourself that and stop. I've known all my life that my binging was useless and made no sense. Like the author I don't believe that I binge because I'm emotionally wounded or need to find myself. I know that binging ruins my life and makes me feel like crap. I also know that it makes zero sense to continue doing it. However for me this is when what the author had to say just didn't work. I couldn't just tell myself it was my "animal" brain wanting to binge. Anyone who suffers from this knows for a fact that's most likely true because that's exactly what you feel like. I feel like an out of control animal. Just knowing that hasn't been enough for me to stop though. It hasn't been enough for me to even slow down. If anything it just made me feel like I'm even more screwed up seeing how many people here were able to have such great results with such a profoundly simple idea.

Maybe this book would be best for those who only subscribe to the belief that they binge for emotional reasons. Many of us who have been to therapy have always been told we do this because mommy didn't love us or daddy didn't come to our dance recital or whatever. Since this is sort of the standard issue therapy most people who suffer from eating disorders believe this. Like the author says many of us go about for years and years trying to perfect ourselves and get ourselves to this magical happy place where everything will be okay and the binges will no longer exist. The truth is though this doesn't happen often.

I thankfully realized years ago that the binging for me had nothing to do with emotion. I stuff my face when I'm happy or sad or anything in between. For me it's always seemed like this scary weird screwed up animal instinct. So when I read the author's whole "animal" brain idea I was intrigued. I was very let down by the rest of the book. I'm not really sure what I was expecting but I was expecting more than just basically being told that we can ignore the urges and just not do it.

I am thrilled that so many others have found help from this book. I hate to give a negative review if this book helped even one person. For me though it was just another let down in a long line of let downs from this type of book.

A Fresh and Welcome Perspective!

After 20+ years of almost non-stop dieting, and bulimia and several failed attempts at therapy, I finally found the answers for breaking this horrible cycle for good in this book. Instead of focusing on emotions, stress, self-esteem and many of the other common explanations offered in conventional treatment, Brain Over Binge provides a simple but powerful concept - that binging eating is the result of allowing the urges that spring from one's "animal" brain to override the wisdom of one's "highest human" brain. By surrendering all the power to the animal brain, the bulimic ends up feeling as if she/he has no choice but to give in to the urge to binge, no matter how irrational or self-destructive it is to do so.

The author presents a 5-step process for taking back your power over the urges. The process seemed like such common sense after all the complex treatment plans I'd followed without success in therapy, it was hard to believe that it could be as simple as this to end my bulimia, but it really was! And the author backs up the simplicity of the cure with a very thorough explanation of the research that strongly supports the credibility of her approach.

Before I read this book, I was locked in a nonstop battle against my urges to binge that was mentally exhausting and that sooner or later, I was doomed to lose. After reading Brain Over Binge and following the process, almost immediately I was able to render my urges as meaningless noise that should be ignored, and now I can feel them getting weaker and weaker every day. The idea of a binge seems so ludicrous at this point, it seems like that behavior belongs to some other person, because I, the person who is in charge of my mind and body now, would never consider doing something so self-destructive and pointless.

Imagine all the pain, not to mention the time and money, that I could have saved if I had access to this knowledge before I started traditional therapy! But there are plenty of others who can benefit from this message regardless of what stage they are at in their diet and disordered eating history. If you're someone who is struggling with bulimia or binge eating, especially if you've tried and failed to find a cure in traditional therapy, I encourage you to read this book. You have nothing to lose, and your whole life to gain!

Feel like you have no control over food?

For more than 20 years I felt helpless to control the food cravings from my "animal brain." It took me several days to finish this book and to completely banish the notion I had no control. After years of therapy and tons of books, the cure was in recognizing that my human brain was the one that made the decision to act on the urges. When I felt that familiar craving to eat something I knew was harmful to me, I said to my animal brain, "I don't have to listen to you." And the feeling just faded away. The cravings that I thought I was helpless to resist just went away! It was a pivotal moment in my life.

No more fighting cravings. No more feeling broken because I couldn't control those cravings. No more muscle pain from sugar and wheat and no more weight gain from too many sweets.

Full disclosure: This is not a one time bam-and-it's-gone-forever. I had more cravings, but each was fainter and responded just as quickly to my "Not listening to you!" Now, two weeks later, I just have to watch for those almost silent moments when I'm hungry and a cookie seems like the perfect answer. It's easy to notice those moments now. Before I would have eaten my third cookie before realizing I was responding to a craving. I haven't had a dessert in over a week not because I am "controlling" my eating, but because I really don't want anything. I am not afraid to eat chocolate any more because it no longer triggers a craving for more. I can eat it, but mostly don't care to.

I suspect this method may work on addictions like tobacco and alcohol and even drugs (if one isn't actually high when trying to be aware of the different brains.) My brother quit smoking instantly with a very similar method.

In addition to making better food choices, I find that I am also making better financial choices. I now ask who wants the item I'm thinking of buying--the animal brain who needs it or the higher brain who will make good use of it.

Come to think of it, I'm also making better choices with time management, but that may be the result of clearer thinking. When I don't eat sugar and wheat, my brain thinks more clearly and my body has more energy! I'm even exercising more.

This book completely changed my life and I will be forever grateful to Kathryn Hansen for putting the time and energy into documenting her experience.

This volume provides a unifying conceptual framework for the genomic control system that encodes development of the body plan. The authors have dealt with a range of formerly disparate fields to create a synthesis refracted through the lens of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). In this book, without immersing the reader in descriptive details, selected recent results from a great variety of animal model systems are embedded in a conceptual resolution of the control logic underlying the developmental process, and of the changes in that logic by which evolution of the body plan occurs. Both the breadth of the biological processes treated, and the framework conceptual approach makes this an entirely unique work. It is intended for biologists and molecular biologists, with or without expertise in development or evolution per se, but it will also provide illumination for engineers, physicists, mathematicians, for students of any of these fields, and for anyone who feels the requirement to organize their understanding of development or evolution as the output of genomic control processes.

The book begins with a consideration of the relative roles of the different levels of control affecting developmental gene expression in animal cells, an overview of the physical nature of the regulatory genome, and the fundamental experimental demonstration of its primacy. The second Chapter provides an in depth understanding of GRNs, of how they generate the regulatory conditions that control all else, of the significance of the cis-regulatory functions operating at the network nodes, of the dynamics of transcriptional activity, and of the Boolean spatial patterns that GRNs output in development. The following three Chapters apply network theory to three different kinds of developmental process: to embryonic development of all major kinds; to development of adult body parts and organs; and to cell fate specification. Chapter 6 examines the conceptual richness that has derived from various approaches to predictive, quantitative models of GRNs and GRN circuits. In the final section of this book much of the foregoing is applied to the conceptual problems of understanding bilaterian evolution, including the underlying explanation of hierarchical animal phylogeny, the flexibility or inflexibility of different aspects of GRNs to evolutionary change, and the discontinuity of evolutionary rates of change, and of how productive evolution of GRNs does and does not occur. The outcome is a set of keys that unlock the apparent mysteries of large aspects of bilaterian evolution.

A fascinating book that is easy to read, provided you have dev-bio background

This is a fascinating book that puts you years ahead of cutting-edge researchers, and fifty years ahead of what you can learn from college textbooks !! Some knowledge of developmental biology is a prerequisite, because you need to know about the puzzle the authors are trying to solve before seeing their solution. I am a researcher working on understanding the genomes and their evolutionary implications, and no book helped me more than this one.

A fascinating book

I am a non-biologist, but I have often wondered how the information in the genome (the DNA) is used to 'build' a mature organism. In so far as it is currently known, this book provides the answer. My concern however was that since I only have a smattering of self-taught biological information, would I be able to make good use of the book.? The answer is a qualified 'yes'. The concepts presented are clear and understandable. They are however often followed by examples to illustrate the points being made which require specialized biological knowledge which I do not have. An example:

"The developmental context or cell type in which the histones around a particular gene will be modified thus depends on expression of both the recruiting transcription factor and the modification enzyme. From what we now know the genome encodes many fewer modification enzymes than it does transcription factors. Thus the same enzymes are recruited by different regulatory factors, depending on the cellular context. For example, the lysine methyltransferase G9a catalyzes H3K9 dimethylation, which is often associated with transcriptional repression. In liver cells, G9a is recruited by the transcription factor E4bp4 to the gene encoding fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and is required for the repression of this gene ( Tong et al., 2013 )."

I have not yet finished the book, but I am enthusiastically pushing ahead. It is a truly fascinating description of our current understanding of the development of organisms, and the profound implication this information has on evolutionary processes.

Hopefully this isn't the best

I'm just back from several weeks in Colombia, and did a great deal of research in selecting a guide book for the trip. The information I gathered from many reviews and websites suggested that the Footprints guide was the best out there at this time. And I have to say that it did do its job -- without it I would have been lost. It was sufficient.

But really could be much, much improved. Some of the main issues I have with it are in regards to directions, maps, etc. Many of the directions given in the "Ins and Outs" section are for people driving. Only driving directions, nothing on how to reach the center of town from the bus station, or the best way to connect on buses to reach a particular destination. I really don't know anyone who travels in South America and opts to rent a car. Also, there are not enough maps given to give someone who likes to travel independently enough information to just get on the street and go for it. Further, when maps aren't included, the written directions that are supposed to substitute in are incredibly poorly written, at times confusing. Whereas, in comparison, I referenced a Lonely Planet guide while on the trip, and the directions they had written out were extraordinarily detailed, which gives so much more confidence to a person setting out on his/her own. Further, there was more than once where the information given in a certain section was contradicted by other information given in the same section.

Finally -- and this is my biggest criticism -- the number of punctuation and grammar errors are astounding. Seriously, that part is absolutely pathetic, and it calls into question the professionalism of the outfit and accuracy of the rest of the information. It was so bad at times as to render the sentence unintelligible. This is simply unforgivable.

I've since learned that the "scandal" regarding the Lonely Planet version was greatly overblown. If the writing and style of LP generally resonates with you, and I say to definitely go that route. There may not be a great book on Colombia out there, but it's best not to let that channel you toward this level of mediocrity.

Though slightly dated this is very good, comprehensive guide

I was in Colombia for three months and used this guide continually.
Peter Pollock writes for a broad audience, but he excels in providing insightful caveats for the adventuresome and ecologically focused traveler. He has information on shipping motorcycles and automobiles to Columbia. He has an excellent section on health, and his 'Background' section is succinct and informative (History, Culture Etc.). He covers the normal tourist destinations and encourages exploration of places that 99% of visitors to Colombia would miss (Tayrona National Park, Ciudad Perdia, etc.).
His accommodations and dining recommendations are adequate, generally accurate, reliable but are becoming outdated. Luckily, although this guide has been out for three years, the prices for lodging in Colombia have stayed relatively stable and accurate and eight out of the ten hotels I selected to visit in Bogota were still open.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: A serious omission for this 2000 guide is the absence of hotel web pages and hotel email addresses. Electronic addresses have become a "must have" for any competitive guide book. A good hotel web page allows you to view the property, get current rates (and specials), view the
property and rooms and make an on-line reservations. This is a must for the next edition.
Good maps are essential in a guide. Bogota, Cartagena, Barranquilla, Cali and Medellin are sprawling cities that desperately need good maps. Bogota has four maps, but they are upside down! Normally maps are oriented with North at the top of the page, not so here, North is at the bottom and South at the top. I had a hell-of-a-time orienting myself, until I got my compass out and discovered this wacko lay out.
Also confusing are references to map numbers that don't exist. Pollard mentions a number, IE in the Bogota section, 'Hacienda Santa Barbra #3 on the map', but the publisher did not print the numbers on the map. His recommended sleeping locations are noted on the maps, but not restaurants. Needless to say, this is an important area that needs significant improvement.
The above shortcomings notwithstanding, you will not want to go to Colombia without this guide. I strongly Recommend it.

Uninspired

This is the most unenthusiastic guide book I've ever read.

This is how it reads: If you are in city A, you have the option to go to see X, Y and Z. This is what you will see at X... This is what you will see at Y... This is what you will see at Z...

The least they could have done is throw in some pictures to accompany their lackluster descriptions, but they don't. This book might help you if you already have an itinerary planned out and you want to look for specifics of how to get around or where to eat, shop or stay. If you're looking for a book to recommend where you should go, what you should see and do, and how to decide between the options given a limited amount of time, this is not the book for you.
