Doug Sahlin is a best selling author and professional photographer who lives in Venice, Florida. He's been a Lensbaby photographer since 2006. Doug has used his Lensbaby equipment to photograph nature, wildlife, landscapes, cityscapes, weddings, and much more. He likes to experiment and stretch the envelope with his Lensbaby photography. He teaches digital photography at local camera stores and presents seminars and workshops about digital photography. He is a Lensbaby advocate, and has helped many Lensbaby photographers get their start.

A Little Disappointing

I have Corey Hilz's second edition Lensbaby book, so my expectations for this book were high. This book fell short. The general theme of this book to me was exposure and how to operate your camera. There is nothing wrong with that, but with Lensbaby lenses, you need the hows and whys, which for me didn't happen.

The very last section of the book showed a few pictures taken with Lensbaby lenses, which are beautiful and state the exposure used, but for me it wasn't enough.

If you can afford a little more to buy a book on Lensbaby, I recommend Cory Hilz's second edition "Lensbaby: Bending Your Perspective". I can only give this Kindle book 3 stars.

Lensbaby Secrets Revealed!

As an avid Lensbaby Enthusiast myself---I believe, this is a tremendous resource for experienced and novice photographers interested in unlocking the key to Lensbaby success! Instead of learning everything by "trial and error", Doug Sahlin has provided ideal uses for the various optic systems and beautiful rich photographs that show his artistic talents. He has captured the ability to share the concepts of working with Lensbaby Optics and getting creative results.

Equally valuable are his insights into how to create better images which can be used on any photographic journey. The chapter on composition provides rationale and specific tips on developing ones own style of photography. Being able to develop skills to enhance your results cuts across all lens and is significant for all photographers.

This book and his enthusiasm made me grab my beloved Lensbaby Composer Pro and head outside to reconnect with the wonder and joy using a Lensbaby.

Thanks Doug, for a wonderful resource with such valuable information! It is a staple now in my Kindle Library and I can refer to it often--perfect for when I am on the go and at home.

For those desiring to use the Lensbaby system

I have followed the photography of Doug Shalin and his expertise with the Lensbaby system of lenses, so when he published this Kindle book I purchased it immediately.

Doug gives a considerable amount of basic information on photography generally and builds on this to put a newbie on a successful path with the Lensbaby optics available. He points out differences of operation by the major brands of camera using Lensbaby optics, the variety of Lensbaby lens bodies, Muse, Composer Pro, Control Freak, and Scout, and how the optics work in these bodies, and the accessories available, as well as which optics these accessories work with, and details on the optics design. There are also warnings in the form of Tips to steer a user away from problems of exposure and operational issues with these interchangeable optics.

If you are considering the Lensbaby System of Optics, get this book; it will help eliminate much initial frustration and flatten your learning curve with these lenses.

I wish a book like Doug's have been available when I started with the Lensbaby; much of my initial confusion would have been cleared up.

What I received was 27 pages of marketing information that is no better than the Amazon press release

I expected a technical manual on using and integrating Alexa/Echo with other systems, and modifying it/using the SDK or application interface. What I received was 27 pages of marketing information that is no better than the Amazon press release. If this is the "ultimate Amazon Echo device and Alexa Voice Service manual tutorial," the word "ultimate" does not mean what I thought it meant.

This was a bait and switch, and I hope the $3.24 you stole from me was worth your integrity and honor.

Great introduction

This is a great book for the basics. However if you've been in the field for more than a year or two you'll likely not encounter a new topic. There is a lot of focus put on local storage and while its important to safeguard that data, your non-bank/commerce/health apps might be over optimizing in this area. The third party libraries many app developers utilize often take user data with neither party knowing.

I spend a lot of my time sketching and erasing. Eraser crumbs get all over the floor of my studio.
When I do the finish, I use a very tiny brush and apply many, many layers of watercolor. Sometimes, after all that, I don't like how it turns out.

Then I start all over again and do it in a different, and hopefully better, way. It can be frustrating.
Like when my son saw this painting, he asked, "Why are those kids reading in the dark?"
So I did this one over too. And it only took three weeks! Sheesh.


This one took even longer to paint, what with all those snowflakes, each one different.
I splattered over the top of it with white paint on a toothbrush. (Not the one I brush my teeth with.)

And finally, these fireworks were done not with an eraser, tiny brush, or toothbrush, but with... gel pens!

Mary Lyn Ray is a conservationist and author of several picture books for children. Ray’s texts are often praised for their lyricism and emotional depth, and in her works she frequently focuses on humankind’s relationship with nature. Suitable for kids trough early elementary

Being a former elementary art teacher, who often used books to begin classroom lessons, I can see the educational value of this simple, but delightful book on STARS. It goes beyond the heavenly or galaxy meaning, offering the shape and other items found in the world that reflect the star qualities. That is a mind stretcher for children age 3 through 9. They need that mental encouragement. With this book on the home shelf, parents and grandparents can take a hand in the advancement of ways to see beyond the obvious in nature and science. It is a multi-curricular book.

The cover, with exception of the title word, is one of the full page pictures on the inside of this book. The art illustrations are a watercolor form with a graphite drawing added once dry. More of an art style than a cartoon look. It is a professional and child-pleasing form to deliver the story. It's the quality one would expect from a book division of Simon and Schuster. Will this become another Caldecott award winner from book illustrator Marla Frazee?

The children represented in the story's drawings are generic enough that one does not have to deal with nationality or ethnic issues. They are just kids, and they find stars in all kinds of wonderful places that offer opportunities to talk with a child listener. What else might they see there? Where else can a star shape be found? These are learning questions perfect for Dad, Nana, Sister, or teacher to present to a child reading for themselves, or being read to, depending upon age. The large 8.5 x 12.5 size gives the book added wonderment to young children.

It states there is an ebook edition available, but for my money, I'd vote on the real deal. It comes with a hard cover with the colored cover drawing PLUS a dust jacket that has the cover child and title slightly embossed.

A good gift idea of a child, or for a family of children, as this story is ageless and will be appropriate as long as the stars are in the sky. Grandparents, like me, should have one ready on their home self, as it's a quick read for grandkids, not requiring a l-o-n-g attention span. And if you know an early elementary teacher, they could use it in class, and will thank you for the resource material. Most teachers have to buy these type of books for their own classroom, I know! Get one to have your child give as a teacher's gift. No special occasion is necessary.

We've Read This 62 Times Already

This is a great little book that is a celebration of, well, stars. As the book says stars are like your best rock, but different because stars are different than rocks. That's just simple good advice. Its a quick read but it has a great story to it. My three year old loves "star book" we read it every night - multiple times. The illustrations compliment the story very nicely too.

Children books are always hard for me to review it seems like because they are so short - but this one has great illustrations and a great little story to it. It made my daughter want to go to the store to buy scissors and shiny paper so she could have a star for her pocket too. That means she's listening.

Frazee's playful illustrations reach for the stars...

I'm a fan of Marla Frazee's illustrations - All the World and especially Everywhere Babies - so I eagerly anticipated receiving Stars through Amazon Vine.

My initial impression is that while it's not my favorite of the three Frazee books I've read, it's a sweet addition to my daughters' library (my oldest is almost two and a half), and I look forward to reading it often with them.

I like that the print in the book is handwriting - that, combined with the many pages of children on mostly white backgrounds, reminded me a little of Malika Fouchier's Lala.

I also like that the characters have cute and distinctive outfits - little red cowboy boots, three pigtails, striped leggings. This might make the book seem slightly dated in years to come, but that's not a bad thing.

I like the simple story and the idea - one simple subject, elaborated. It's particularly good for my two-and-a-half year old, who is at the age where it's still a wonder to her that the same word can have so many different meanings, and where she's beginning to make obvious word associations and participate in conversations. A few days after getting sick from being spun "so fast" on a swing, I told her I would cut her nails "so fast" - and she warned me, "I might throw up...").

I love Frazee's playful, swirly, rolling illustrations - some of my favorite pages in the book are the ones where her illustrations have the space and subject to be the most dynamic, like the strawberry-and-pumpkins page, where the horizon seems to follow the twist of the wind, and the dandelion pages, where the little tufts become a giant spiral in the sky. Maybe it's a little greedy of me, but I wish there were more full- and two-page spreads in the book! Still, I can't say there's any skimping on illustrations.

If I could, I'd give it three-and-a-half stars; overall, I think it's sweet and will lead to many fun discussions with my girls.

As a parent of a child with Asperger's, I have found this book immensely helpful. After a round of intravenous antibiotics and some bullying and who knows what other triggers, my normally high-functioning son had become almost nonfunctional to the point that he could not get out of bed to attend school several days last semester. He was completely exhausted, depressed, and anxious. He would come home from school and go straight to bed. I had the pediatrician test for everything we could think of, and all tests were negative. We were about to put him on anti-depressants when I came across this book. After implementing the protocols, his energy is back. He is calmer and more focused than ever. He has returned to hanging out with his friends. His daily displays of anger with his little brother--something that predated the extreme exhaustion--have mostly subsided. He is better than ever, and my family is more peaceful than ever.

Many doctors with children on the spectrum are implementing these protocols for their own families and seeing results; I have been reading the other books out there as well. To the passionate nay-sayers posting on this site who clearly have not tried the protocol, I fully expect the science to catch up. Regardless of the science, I am a practical woman. If it works for my son, I'm in. My pediatrician reviewed the protocol and said it would not hurt to try it.

No one is saying medications and more traditional treatments for ASD should be discarded, but when my child feels better--and he does feel better on the protocol--then he is going to be in a better place for everything life throws at him. And as a child with Asperger's, life throws him a lot. I am thrilled to say that at the moment, he is jumping his hurdles like a champ, and I am immensely proud of him.

All that said, I will not pretend that getting a smart, independent 14-year-old with ASD to accept new protocols and new foods is a walk in the park. But I am a fighter when it comes to my son, and we have a strong and trusting relationship, so even when he has dug in to fight against me, he knows I am in it for him. After a long battle, he is gradually coming to see for himself that things are better. When he went away for a weekend and ditched the enzymes, he was worse when he came back. It has been two steps forward and one step back the whole way because he refused to take the enzymes at school so I had to go completely GFCF. When he complained about that, I told him that he could have some of his old foods back if he would stay on the enzymes. He was mad about both options, but I gave him all the choices I could, and in the end he ran out of fight. Since he has been compliant long enough to see results, the tide is turning. His dad, who lives in another city and just spent a week with him, is 100% sold as well. He had never seen his two boys interacting so peacefully.

This is great stuff!

Fantastic! I have 3 kids on the spectrum, one very high functioning and a set of autistic twins. The twins are nonverbal, although one has been babbling for a couple months. We are just about to begin week 3 of the enzyme protocol and I can see so much difference in the twins! They're interacting with each other more, they're giving me better eye contact, my babbling twin has been babbling more and with more varied syllables, and my completely nonverbal one has started babbling. I'm not seeing as drastic a change in my high functioning one in terms of behavior, which makes sense, but the persistent rash he's had on his face is almost cleared out. I have this book on kindle, but bought a hard copy to lend out. I highly recommend to everyone!

With all my postings warning of the vaccine injury epidemic and the links to autism, I have to tell you a good news story❣
My grandson Hunter came to Beckley for a Mimi visit several weeks ago and we went to visit Dr. Janet Lucas Lintala for some observation and suggestions after reading her book. My daughter had completed the book's questionnaires and was in the appointment via FaceTime .
We have seen incredible results from her advice in an explosion of speech, marked decrease in sensory seeking behaviors, very few meltdowns, back to taking naps and sleeping well at night and he is eating like crazy! All healthy organic eating combined with added enzymes. There are many things to monitor and outright avoid, but if you know anyone that may be struggling with language delays, behavior issues, anything on the autism spectrum, please get this book and work through all the questions, then make an appointment with Janet. She has spent years uncovering ways to help children thrive after having a son on the spectrum. Forever grateful for meeting this great lady!
