Acne, Asthma, And Other Signs You Might Be Half Dragon, by Rena Rocford

Allyson fights acne, not trolls.

As an inhaler-carrying member of the asthma society, she just wants to meet the father who turned her mother into a paranoid, move-across-the-nation freak. Now she’s trying to fit in at yet another school, but for the first time in her life, she has a best friend, Beth.

When Allyson accidentally spits fire at kidnappers in the mall, she realizes why her father isn’t in the picture: she’s half dragon. Her acne? Emerging scales. Her asthma? The side effects of her dragon’s fire breath.

Instead of freaking out, unflappable Beth reveals her own troll heritage and explains how things work with the supernatural creatures hiding within the modern world of smartphones and skyscrapers.

When trolls kidnap a unicorn, Beth gets blamed. Allyson is determined to prove Beth’s innocence and keep her friend off the unicorn chopping block. When they start looking for the kidnappers, they get a call from the last person they expect: Allyson’s father. He tries to warn them off, but he’s been put under a spell by the kidnappers to keep the victims from escaping. Nothing short of death can stop him.

Now Allyson must choose between killing the father she’s always dreamed of, or letting her best friend die for a crime she didn’t commit.

Flawed, but very Entertaining story!
By Jen Lapa
I found this book highly entertaining! Allyson is a very sympathetic character, as is her rather new best friend Beth. The explanation for Allyson’s severe acne and asthma (of the title) was quite entertaining and actually fairly believable, as was the entire concept of the supernatural world that she finds herself a part of. What I did find hard to believe, however, was the fact that the girls are nearly kidnapped by trolls and escaped in part due to Allyson spitting fire at them – and Allyson doesn’t share ANY of this with her mom! And later her Aunt Aggy disappears, leaving her vintage BMW behind, and it doesn’t even occur to Allyson or Beth or anyone, despite other weird things that are going on, that she might have been kidnapped, which she was! Another obvious lapse in reality is when Mr June attacks Allyson on the school grounds, threatens to turn her hide into tack. Instead of being taken to the police to do something in response like file an assault charge against the crazed adult who attacked her, she is instead lead away to the Principal’s office to be reprimanded and given a band-aid.
I found some of the characters rather one-dimensional, but overall they were quite interesting and rather believable. John was probably one of my favorite characters! I especially like the scene where John looks at Allyson and winks.
Despite the overall good writing and plot, the chapter set at the campground involving the Goblin King, however, was rather confusing, and the entire episode seemed rather pointless. Perhaps it will come in to play more in later in a sequel to the book, as the ending definitely seemed to indicate that there would be some.
Despite the items I’ve mentioned, I found the book fairly well written and the storyline inventive and entertaining. I’d definitely recommend it, especially for a lighter read. I’m anxious to see what happens in any sequel(s)!
I received a free copy of this book from Curiosity Quills Press in exchange for an honest review.

Action, Humor and Simply a Fun Read
By Tonja Drecker
Although I loved the cover on this one, after I read the blurb, I wasn't sure I'd like it or not. . .but since I already had it, I figured I might as well give it a go. And I'm so glad I did!

This is a modern day fantasy, grounded in the every day world as we know it. Well, except that humans aren't alone. Fantastical creatures--unicorns, dragons, trolls, and so many others--live among us but look so human, no one except for their kind can tell the difference. Allyson is just about to turn fifteen and has never given a second thought to fairy tales or anything of their kind, but when she spits fire and grows scales, her eyes are opened.

This is such a fun tale. Within the first pages, a normal, teenage shopping mall excursion turns into an attempted kidnapping with dragons and trolls. Not much time is spent on getting to know Allyson first, but it's not necessary. Her character is sympathetic from beginning on, and her shock about life unfolding around her is a delight to experience right along with her.

The plot is stuffed full of action, and poor Allyson not only struggles with her new-found dragonness, but fights off all sorts of creatures who are out to get her. It was easy to get caught up into the story, but hard to put it down. Especially since every time it appeared she and her best friend were getting somewhere, luck would seem to blow up in their faces. But then, the two are a bit reckless and although their intentions are always good, their plans aren't always as solid as they could be. It makes their decisions very believable...well, in so far as a teenage dragon and troll going up again other fantastic creatures in disguise can be considered believable. But there's tons of chases, lots of precarious situations and just the right amount of snippy humor thrown in.

Summed up, this is a thrilling and fun ride into a world which is very familiar, but full of fantasy. Anyone into a little more light-hearted but still adventure filled urban fantasy is sure to love this.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

A great new book for the YA/NA Urban Fantasy genre and a great start to a new series.
By Janis - Eclectic Mumma
I would like to thank Curiosity Quills Press for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.

Move over Ms MacAlister and her Wyverns – there’s a new type of dragon in town! Well, half-dragon… and not just one town, a few towns… and other places.

I loved this book! Being a huge fan of Urban Fantasy and world’s within our own that have a good dash of reality, a large sprinkle of humour and a dollop of sarcasm – how could I NOT love this book?

And thank goodness for a book that contains teens, supernatural creatures and NO SPARKLY VAMPIRES! Hoorah! I do love it when you get writers who know how to write a great book and break free of those horrible cookie cutter moulds that seemed to restrain the Urban Fantasy genre for so long. We need more books like this! So glad it appears to be the first in a series. Please put me down for the next one!

Okay, so now I try and talk to you about the book without giving away the plotline… as, seriously, you want to know about the story, you need to read it. ;-)

But basically Allyson is your typical teen outcast with no true place to call home, always on the move and with more than the usual pimples of puberty to deal with. She meets someone she really connects with, finds out there is more to her life than what she thought and is then thrown into an adventure that introduces both our protagonist and the reader to the world of the Kin and all that is going on. Seriously, read it. My blurb does it no justice.

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would. Lovers of the Wyvern series by Katie MacAlister, or Other Worldly book like the Hollows by Kim Harrison or even Mary Janice Davidson will enjoy this book. Though it is more of a YA genre than they are as the main characters are teens and not the twenty somethings of the series I’ve mentioned. Still, ‘Acne, Asthma, and other signs you might be half dragon’ is not your typical teen Urban Fantasy (see my comments about the lack of pretty fanged wonders) and so really is worth a read.

Would I buy this book for myself? Yes I would. And I look forward to the next in the series. Ms Rocford’s style is light, refreshing and she sets a good fast-paced scene that keeps you reading and kept my ‘One more chapter’ mantra going. So this book, series and author are definitely ones I will keep on my list of things to remember.

In summary: A well written, fast-paced YA Urban Fantasy where reality will still make even the supposedly graceful and wise dragon’s bunny hop from time to time. Well thought out, highly entertaining and a fantastic first book in what looks to be a great new series. Well worth you checking out tomorrow!

Erdmann was given unprecedented access to every aspect of the production of Star Trek Deep Space Nine in order to compile this book which is considered, by some, the ultimate guide to Star Trek's grittiest and most complex series. Insight into the making of Deep Space Nine is provided by the set designers, cast and crew, and the writers and producers. Characters over the series have grown and developed, matured and met several challenges, learnt to cope with disaster and joy, defeat and victory. Each one has had his or her story played out around the space station Deep Space Nine, which is guarding the wormhole against invading Dominion forces. Episode by episode this companion takes readers through the seven-year drama, reliving the moments as the story unfolds.

I am the author of the Star Trek Deep Space Nine Companion. I want to thank all of you for the wonderful reviews you've given to this book. But please do not be confused by Amazon's error: This book is NOT out of print. Both the publisher and I have informed Amazon of their error many times, but the company apparenty does have a system to correct their error. The book is "in print" and available. Period. Again, thanks for your good words. Terry J. Erdmann

Sisko lives! And here's how to keep track of his adventures
By John DiBello
I'm an avid fan of the "Star Trek The Next Generation Companion," and this all-new volume examining what is arguably the best (certainly the most controversial) Trek series is must reading for anyone intrigued by the creation, scriptwriting and production of the series.
Each and every episode is covered in depth with a plot summary and detailed history "behind the scenes" of the episode's creation, writing, and filming. One of the reasons I enjoyed DS9 so much is the involved storyline of the series--the Dominion War--and having each of the episodes laid out in chronological order, with extensive detail on the structure of the storyline and subplots, helped me appreciate even more what Berman and Piller and company set out to do. It's filled with entertaining stories and nuggets of background information--how did they do they, where did they get the idea for that, what worked (and didn't)...it's ideal for the Star Trek fan as well as anyone interested in television writing and production.
I don't entirely agree with some of the previous review comments: understand that a book like this takes time to write and create, not to mention publish, have sales reps advance into bookstores, and print and ship. I work in publishing, and with very few exceptions, publishing books takes a *long* lead time. There's no way this could have been ready (or as complete) if it were issued last year. I'd also say, again as someone working inside publishing, that adding color photographs and a hardback binding, while nice, would dramatically increase the price of the book, probably to forty dollars or above.
The very best compliment I can give a book like is that it makes me want to go back to the original source again. If you're a Trek fan, I dare you to pick this up and not get totally involved in it, and *then* want to dig out your tapes and rewatch all your favorite episodes...and even a few that this book will give you a brand new appreciation for.

A dream come true for the DS9 fan!
By Johnny B
This amazing book is an absolute must-have for the hardcore fan of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine... if you are like me and savored every episode over all seven seasons, you will appreciate the author's in-depth coverage, behind-the-scenes info on every episode, and his obvious affection for the show. This book is over 700 pages and filled with new photos & illustrations I have never seen anywhere else, including really nifty things like production drawings, some hilarious props, and even a map of Bajor. The many interviews with the cast & creators alone are worth the price. If hearing "The Way You Look Tonight" makes you misty, buy this book!

Hardy and enduring
By Allen Smalling
This is the 20th anniversary re-do of a highly influential book from 1971. DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET, although not a huge book, manages to be a treatise on feeding the world sanely, a guide to nutrition with few or no animal products, and a cookbook all in one. If you've ever wondered about "protein complementarity" this book will show you how to achieve it. If you've ever questioned the wisdom of a federal government that subsidizes the growing of yellow corn to feed cattle to provide beef when grass will do, this offers insight (although there are newer books such as THE OMNIVORE'S DILEMMA that offer a more up-to-date take). SMALL PLANET is also a helpful guide to vegan (occasionally ovo-lacto-vegetarian) cooking, although that segment is also a little out-of-date, with frequent mention of tofu but none of quinoa, for example. Because of its overall usefulness, though, only the fact that the basic text is over 40 years old keeps me from giving it five stars.

Thought-provoking
By Richard Middleton
One-star reviews of this book seem to focus on whether recent science has disproved some of its assertions, or whether the recipes are any good. There's even a somewhat vituperative stream on climate change, diet links to blood groups, and other contentious issues.
For me, these are essentially peripheral and miss the point. I have spent most of my professional life concerned with trying to improve people's conditions in developing countries. So what resonated with me was the theme that America's devotion to excess protein has severe adverse implications not just for how the rest of the world eats but also on much broader issues such as food security, international trade and balance of payments.
Of course, it would be comforting to be sure that the author's statements are rigorous and based on fact (I'm an engineer, and we prefer to avoid vague assertions) . But ultimately whether, for example, protein complementarity is valid is of less importance than the general principle that we need to eat lower down the food chain, and that there are excellent ways of doing so without necessarily becoming a complete vegetarian. The 20th Edition is now itself over 20 years old, and doubtless outdated in many ways, but it serves to spark inquiry and debate about a very important subject - and along the way provides some recipes well worth exploring!

By Linda Sereda
This book is very informative, especially about how to eat meatless meals, yet get all the protein you need. It has many recipes for dishes which you can make without meat but which are protein-rich. She gives the combinations of vegetables and/or dairy which, combined, make a perfect protein. This is very useful for students or others on a small budget who can't afford to buy a lot of meat.

Amazon.com Review
Evangeline Scoffield of East Little Teignmouth, Cornwall, is a fraud. Rescued at a young age from an orphanage she had called home for most of her life, Evangeline goes to live with an eccentric and rich woman named Leona. When Leona disappears without a trace, Evangeline learns that she is the sole heir to the woman's fortune, and she wastes no time in packing a cache of cash and heading for Spain, posing as the refined lady she had always longed to be. To her shock, Prince Danior of Baminia appears and announces that he is her fianc. He insists that she is the Princess Ethelinda and that they must return immediately to her kingdom where they are to be married. Evangeline's protests are cut short when someone lobs a bomb into her room and Danior pulls her to safety, explaining all the while that evil forces are determined to kill them both to prevent their marriage and the subsequent joining of their two kingdoms. The two set off on the long journey to Princess Ethelinda's kingdom, with Evangeline feeling as if she's tumbled down the rabbit hole. Not only does Danior stubbornly refuse to listen to her, but he's determined to consummate their betrothal. Evangeline's determination to set right this wrong is sadly undermined by her own growing attraction to the powerful, dark-haired prince. Still, Evangeline knows she must convince him of her humble beginnings, for a prince could never truly love a simple girl such as herself. Who is right, Evangeline or Danior? Is Evangeline the Princess Ethelinda or isn't she? And if not, how will Danior cope with the deep love he feels for her? The Runaway Princess has a dash of myth and magic, colorful secondary characters, and a wonderfully heroic hero and heroine. What more could a reader of romance ask for? --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly
Dodd (A Well Favored Gentleman) transports readers into another enticing place and time, in this Regency with an inventive plot and sparkling characters. When English orphan Evangeline Scoffield comes into an unexpected inheritance, she decides to spend the money on an adventure. She travels abroad and masquerades as a "lady of mystery" at a Spanish resort. Everyone is awed by her aloofness and poise, convinced that she must be of royal lineage. When a handsome man claiming to be Prince Danior sees her, he insists she is the runaway princess of Serephinia?his betrothed. Evangeline goes along with the prince's declaration and finds herself in the middle of a war, and in mortal peril. When she tries to explain who she really is, nobody will believe her, including the gorgeous prince. Evangeline soon learns that she's destined to fulfill a prophesy and marry the prince, whether she wants to or not. Dodd's delightful story should gain glowing reviews from her growing horde of fans.

From Library Journal
Kidnapped by Prince Danior, Crown Prince of Baminia, who thinks she is the long-lost princess of Serephina and his intended bride, the orphaned Miss Evangeline Scoffield proves to be more strong-willed than any princess has a right to be. Old prophecies, crowns in crystal cases, and thousand-year-old saints add interest to a creative, intricately plotted story that features Dodd's trademark humor and sensuality. Dodd (That Scandalous Evening, Avon, 1998) is an award-winning writer of fast-paced, well-crafted historicals who lives in Texas. Readers will be waiting for her latest.

Just OK
By Catherine. Heathcliff
The story line is clever - unique and has potential. But it was confusing. There were hints to the resolution but then these would be confusingly countered by something else. Hard to explain but the end result was a not very satisfying story. I didn't think the chemistry between the main characters was strong enough to sustain the relationship. She kept insisting she was not the princess (ad nauseum) and he only cared about being king. I never felt he really cared about her. I didn't really like either of the main characters all that much. And there are inconsistencies. She is a large woman. Tall and not slight. But he carries her on his back for miles over mountains. I felt sorry for him! The writing isn't bad for the most part. Typos and weird things that may not be the author's fault. I won't be reading any more of this series. This is the second work by this author I have read. And probably my last. I will try other authors before I return to her work. Just my opinion. I am choosey with my reading time.

A Cinderella story!
By WHoosierBookie
If you have a love for fairy tales then you will love this book.
Evangeline is an orphan who has never had a chance to be her own woman. Suddenly she has the opportunity to travel and spend, so what if the money isn't legally hers? After one little taste of the good life, she will start a new, more quiet existence for herself. She doesn't count on all the gossip that she attracts.
Prince Danior is searching for his Princess Evangeline. Together only they can fulfill the prophecy to unite their two countries. His Princess has gotten a bit gunshy as the date that they must be joined together swiftly approaches. She has written him a letter telling him she can't do her duty. He is sure he can make her come around and see that they have to be married for the good of all their people. If only he could find her.
When Danior hears about the mysterious stranger staying at an inn, he is convinced she is his princess. He hasn't seen her since she was a child, but she has the coloring and features of her people.
This story has adventure. Danior must get his princess back to their country to start their rule. This is not easy because of the rebels who would rather not have the prophecy fulfilled. Also because of Evangeline herself, who knows that Danior has the wrong girl.
While there are some discrepencies and there is a supernatural edge to it, this a romantic tale about a girl who has nothing but the dream of a quiet, isolated life. What she winds up with and how she gets it is truly more than she could have ever hoped for. Oh, yes, you will also laugh!

Not a bad read, just about average....
By A Customer
If you want a good review, read Mrs. Giggle's review below (Many times I seem to agree with what she says). For a thin, on the surface, quick read, this book is just the ticket. We have a spunky yet intellegent heroine, and a...well...hero. Ms. Dodd's characters seemed a little flat to me. Don't dig too deep into these characters, you might come out the other side. Evangaline grew up as an orphan and was miraculously "found", (unknown to her of course) and taught everything she needed to know about being a princess (not knowning she was being groomed for the role). That's her character, all of it... Our hero on the other hand is a self centered, conceited, neanderthal. Everything he does is for the good of his country. I think he even convinces himself that falling in love is for it TOO!!!! Every part of this story glosses the surface. For example, what about the revolutionaries? Their beliefs, their motives, the organization? We are told that they ravage the countryside but are never shown it. Too much passive voice, telling; not enough active voice, showing. I just wish that there was some more depth to this story, I really wanted to love it, not just like it.

Nobody blows smoke like Nick Naylor. He’s a spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies–in other words, a flack for cigarette companies, paid to promote their product on talk and news shows. The problem? He’s so good at his job, so effortlessly unethical, that he’s become a target for both anti-tobacco terrorists and for the FBI. In a country where half the people want to outlaw pleasure and the other want to sell you a disease, what will become of the original Puff Daddy?

Amazon.com Review
"Nick Naylor had been called many things since becoming chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies. But until now no one had actually compared him to Satan." They might as well have, though. "Gucci Goebbels," "yuppie Mephistopheles," and "death merchant" are just a few endearments Naylor has earned himself as the tobacco lobby's premier spin doctor. The hero of Thank You for Smoking does of course have his fans. His arguments against the neo-puritanical antismoking trends of the '90s have made him a repeat guest on Larry King, and the granddaddy of Winston-Salem wants him to be the anointed heir. Still, his newfound notoriety has unleashed a deluge of death threats.

Christopher Buckley's satirical gift shines in this hilarious look at the ironies of "personal freedom" and the unbearable smugness of political correctness. Bracing in its cynicism, Thank You for Smoking is a delightful meander off the beaten path of mainstream American ethics. And despite his hypertension-inducing, slander-splattered, morally bankrupt behavior--which leads one Larry King listener to describe him as "lower than whale crap"--you'll find yourself rooting for smoking's mass enabler. --Rebekah Warren

From Publishers Weekly
"Nick Naylor had been called most things since becoming chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies, but until now no one had actually compared him to Satan." So begins the adventures of this protagonist, a shamelessly slimy yuppie and PR flack par excellence for the tobacco industry. The story, such as it is, consists of Naylor's attempts to prop up his failing corporate star by expanding his defense of the evil weed. Working the airwaves, he engineers successful, hysterical appearances on Oprah and Larry King , after which he's kidnapped by anti-tobacco terrorists who attempt to murder him by plastering his body with nicotine patches. As usual, Buckley's humor is over the top, although he doesn't exactly choose tough targets (his previous novel, The White House Mess , tackled the decline and fall of the Reagan/Bush dynasty). But the blatant immorality of Big Tobacco inspires some wonderfully comic vehicles, such as the delightfully morbid M.O.D. (Merchants of Death) squad, a semi-secret weekly lunch club that consists of Naylor and fellow flacks for the NRA and the alcohol industry. The silly plot sometimes gets in the way of the funny stuff, and it's far more entertaining to watch Naylor try to maintain his fiefdom and satisfy his libido amid the madcap spin control. Buckley is a smoother, funnier and more refined heir apparent to Art Buchwald's throne, and this book cements his position as the best up-and-coming political satirist on the literary map. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Since the titles of so many books are mysterious or ironic, it is pleasant to come upon one that says exactly what it means. Nick Naylor is chief spokesperson for the Academy of Tobacco Studies and as such has the dubious honor of defending and promoting the rights of smokers at a time when they are accorded the same treatment lepers once were. Like most good romps, this one is sportive and whimsical on the surface, but it manages to let loose a roundhouse punch at the advertising industry and the vacuum at the heart of power. At one point, the joke wears a little thin and imminent tedium threatens, but thanks to the author's inventiveness, the novel's earlier zest is soon recovered, and the plot starts spinning merrily along once again. Buckley's prose is well behaved and his dialog brisk and lifelike. All in all, an amiable and worthwhile work from the author of the best-selling The Whitehouse Mess (Random, 1986) who is now an editor at Forbes FYI magazine.

Great satire, so-so thriller
By Wheelchair Assassin
Nick Naylor, the protagonist of Christopher Buckley's "Thank You for Smoking," gives new definition to the term "antihero." Despite his position, he's not really a bad guy. Sure, he makes six figures a year lying through his teeth as the chief lobbyist at the Academy of Tobacco Studies in Washington, but he's not really making anybody smoke cigarettes. As he explains it, he's just moderating between two competing groups, namely the cigarette companies and the anti-smoking zealots. Besides, someone's got to pay the mortgage and his son's prep-school tuition. Even he realizes that his rationalization sounds like something a Nuremberg defendant might say ("I vas only paying ze mortgage"), but it takes a certain courage to go on TV and say there's no demonstrable link between smoking and disease. Perhaps Buckley's greatest achievement here is that he can take a guy who lies to sell cigarettes and make him into a sympathetic figure.
Nick Naylor's life provides the basis for Buckley's often hilarious look at the "neo-puritanism" of mid-nineties America and the attempts of tobacco companies to fight it. And although I hate cigarettes, I think a book like this needed to be written. Anybody who's ever been repulsed by those ridiculous "Truth" ads where a bunch of obnoxious young people harass those who make and sell cigarettes should get a good laugh at Buckley's portrayal of the sanctimonious forces of political correctness. As Nick tells Oprah Winfrey in one uproarious scene, cigarette opponents aren't above manipulating children and trying to tell everyone else how to think. And anything that takes the wind out of the sails of political correctness is fine by me.
Much of the book's humor comes from Nick's lunch meetings with his friends in the Mod (an acronym for "Merchants of Death") Squad. Composed of Nick, alcohol lobbyist Polly Bailey, and one-armed gun advocate Bobby Jay Bliss, the Mod Squad is sort of a combination support group and mutual admiration society. In the presence of their own, the three death merchants can work on their PR strategies, discuss their latest misfortunes at the hands of the neo-puritans, and compare just how much death they've caused and how hated they are. In one particularly humorous scene, Polly and Bobby Jay are saying how much hate mail they get, and Nick just scoffs and says, "HATE mail? ALL of my mail is hate mail."
Of course, even satires need plots, so Buckley throws in some intrigue regarding a plot to have Nick killed. When a team of killers kidnaps Nick and covers him in nicotine patches, Nick finds himself suspected by the FBI of having done the deed himself as a PR stunt. In an effort to clear his name, Nick eventually traces the attempt on his life to a conspiracy in the upper levels of the tobacco lobby. Although this plot had possibilities, it felt somewhat underdeveloped to me. At a mere 272 pages, "Thank You for Smoking" isn't quite long enough to function effectively as both a satire and a thriller. The plot's pretty interesting, I just would've like to see a little more space devoted to it.
Still, this book is worth a read. It's fast-paced, well written, and remarkably perceptive. More than once I found myself laughing out loud at the absurdity of it all. If an avid non-smoker like myself can find himself rooting for a tobacco lobbyist, than anyone can.

I would have never guessed that I would even consider reading a book about a PR man for the tobacco industry ... and I certainly could have never imagined that if I did, I'd enjoy it so much!
I picked up Thank You For Smoking at the suggestion of a friend, and was pulled into the narrative immediately. The story is so tightly and entertainingly written that I practically inhaled it (pun intended), taking less than a day to finish the book's nearly 300 pages even though for the most part I had to read it a few pages at a time while working at a conference.
Author Christopher Buckley pulled off the seemingly impossible here: making a despicable protagonist like Nick Naylor seem sympathetic. I won't go into the way Mr. Buckley does it, but it is definitely worth finding out for yourself.
My only complaint is that the ending to the story wraps up a little too neatly, a little too much like Hollywood. It's a weakness, but not a serious enough of a weakness to cloud the value of this original and clever book.

Funny satire with a real bite on just about everyone
By Craig Matteson
Christopher Buckley knows how to write satire that has a delicious bite along with the laughs. Nick Naylor, our protagonist, is a highly paid consultant for the tobacco lobby that is thinking about cutting back expenses because of their shrinking market and lack of success on the Hill. So, Nick decides on a plan to go on the offensive for the public mind and breath. Unfortunately for Nick, his new public notoriety brings attention from some folks who have a rather aggressive passion against smoking.

This book takes on everyone. Lawmakers, lawyers, lobbyists, amoral businessmen who don't care what they sell as long as they get rich, activists who are motivated by a lot other than their stated cause, media types, and the public. We all get it in ways that will make you say ouch and still find a laugh.

Good novel that has held up well.

An excellent book for beginners and experts - LOVE the illustrations
By Gisela Hausmann
Considering that I am an expert in crocheting, who has crochet hundreds of projects I was surprised about two things:

a) I learned new stuff, and
b) how "complete" this book is.

Born in Austria, I learned to crochet in Austria (reading German instructions); when I moved to the United States I relearned the US terms to be able to follow instructions how to crochet the one or other piece. However, I was unaware that there are different terms for certain stitches in American and British English.

Considering how many crappy books are published these days, this is a surprisingly solid, excellent book!!

I really picked it up because I wanted to check out "what's new." Though the book contains fewer projects than I thought, I was impressed with the excellent design of the book, the absolutely fabulous pictures, and the excellent bibliographies. As an author myself I really appreciate it when other authors do their homework and name all sources.

The color illustrations showing how the various stitches are done are probably the best I have ever seen, much better than in many well known magazines I have read.

From illustrations how to store the yard, how to read instructions, fillet graphs, to pictures that show the crochet needle running through the work piece and picking up the yard on the other side author Dorothy Wilks does it all.

If you want to know how "complete" and fabulously illustrated this book is, here is proof:

At the end of this book the author explains "blocking," the process of giving a completed piece the desired shape. She uses a shawl as an example and shows picture of the finished piece, explains that it has to be sprayed with water, pulled into the correct shape, then use blocking pins to keep in that shape and weigh it down until it is completely dry. She then shows a picture of the same piece - finished. Even though I have been reading books about knitting and crocheting for more than forty years I have never seen pictures showing both states; "before and after" blocking.

Love this book - highly recommended.

Great section on afghans!
By Michael S.
This book is huge and has all that you need! It is a comprehensive guide to crocheting and makes a great reference tool for any crafter. There are plenty of patterns and projects included. One of the things that I really loved about it was the section on afghans, which my grandmother used to make all the time. The author will show you how to bring stitches together into beautiful patterns. She also teaches in detail about filet stitches and charts. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to crochet.

WOW! What a great set of books!
By Shirley
I really love this set of 10 books, it is perfect for beginners and anyone who knows how to crochet but wants to learn more advanced stitches.I love the pictures since I am one who can't learn from just words. If you want to learn to crochet you won't go wrong with this set. I included a few snaps but wanted to include more since the pictures are so good to help the learning process. The original price for the set is $74.87, I got it free from Pubabook. Definitely worth the time to do an honest review! Need I say more.

Great textbook of cosmology.
By A Customer
This may not be one of the easiest books to read, but it is definetely one of the most informative and up-to-date on the subject. The theories of universe creation, galaxy and star formations, etc., as well as the supporting evidence are presented in full. Speculations on the future, as well as alternative theories to the big bang are briefly covered as well.
The book's difficulty and the fact that it resembles a textbook is the only reason why I downgraded my recommendation from 5 stars. Silk wastes no time and space, and pummels you with facts and theories from the onset, with little in between. The textbook feeling is also conveyed through the author's completely objective tone throughout. This may even seem frustrating to some, especially in the early chapters when Silk presents dozens of competing theories and observations, without even a hint as to which is more likely or which he himself supports. Nevertheless, he does proceed to elaborate on all the major theories and specifies which currently carry the most support in the scientific community and why.
Overall, I highly recommend the book, especially to those who are not new to at least the basic ideas of cosmology. Others will need to be a bit patient as the reading is quite dense -- Silk packs about a 1000 pages of info into 400 pages of text; inevitably you may need to re-read certain parts at times in order to follow the logical flow and development of presented theories. I found the observational data to be too technical sometimes as well, and just took the author's word that it supports the theory forementioned.

More opaque than the Big Bang itself
By Michael Selby
I've read quite a few books on astrophysics, cosmology, etc., and this is one of the most poorly written books I've come across. It's too bad, because the writer is trying to be current and thorough. But he doesn't know how to write clearly, his grammar is terrible, he skips steps in his explanations, jumps all over the place, and leaves you wondering "what in the heck is this guy trying to say??". Not recommended.

UNDERSTANDING THE BIG BANG
By Mead C. Whorton Jr.
Joseph's Silk's The Big Bang is one of the finest science books ever written for the educated reader. If you have ever wondered how the universe was born and how it evolved, this book is an invaluable key to understanding these questions. Mr. Silk's prose is very understandable and he clearly explains the myriad topics of modern cosmology. After sketching the origins of modern cosmology; he takes the reader on a dazzling journey which covers evidence for the big bang, the first millisecond of the universe and the primeval fireball, cosmological models, formation of stars, origin and evolution of the galaxies, origin of the heavy elements, the future of the universe, and alternatives to the big bang. The book contains mathematical notes to assist the perplexed/inquiring reader, a detailed glossary, and suggestions for further reading. In addition, the book is richly illustrated with numerous black and white photographs, charts, and diagrams. My favorite diagram is the one on page 98 which depicts alternative big bang models. And on page 96, Mr. Silk clearly lays out the Friedmann equation which is the fundamental equation of big bang cosmology. There is also a center section of beautiful color photographs. And best of all, Amazon offers the book for only $13.95; a bargain at today's prices. I have read several introductory works on cosmology and the big bang but this one stands alone. In summary, this is an excellent expository work on cosmology and the modern big bang theory. If you have any interest in this topic at all, you must have a copy of this book.
