About the Author
Joseph W. Weiss is professor of management at Bentley University, where he has received an Innovation in Teaching award. He is on the honor roll of the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society and is a Fulbright Program Specialist, past chair of the Academy of Management’s Management Consulting Division, and current cochair of the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences IT/Project Management track. He is the author of five books and many journal articles and has consulted with Fortune 500 firms, government agencies, and start-up companies.

This book on Bontecou's work is amazing.
It allows the work to speak for itself with large, color images and Bontecou's work defies definition... And triggers the imagination. If the cover intrigues you the book will dazzle.

Lee Bontecou is a force. Her sculptural prowess is nearly unmatched. this work has some of the best critical essays I have ever read, and the bountiful photographs are most excellent.

Catalog is a Wonderful Companion to the Exhibition

It is difficult to review the exhibition catalog without first taking in the Lee Bontecou survey at one of the museum exhibitions currently traveling the US. Unfortunately the exhibition will travel to only three museums in the three largest cities in the US, yet most of the works come from public and private collections throughout the country. Luckily, readers get to see all of the pieces in a carefully written, scholarly book full of full-color reproductions, several essays about the artist and her process, essays about the artist and surrounding influences from (and in) art history, and a detailed exhibition checklist with thumbnail photos of each work in the full exhibition. There are over 150 works in the traveling exhibition presented in a catalog of 240 pages. The photographs are standard for a catalog presentation but photographs of the sculptural works may not give accurate renderings of scale or detail; once again, this is a catalog and not a coffee table book of a few of the artist's better-known works. For just a few dollars more than the softcover, get the hardbound edition; you will want to keep this book for a lifetime.

My hope in writing this book is to share the information about the daily lives of the Polish people living in the rural areas of Poland. The book also describes some of the reasons for leaving Poland, the trek across Poland and Germany to the ports, the voyage across the North Atlantic, arrival in America and their life in their new country. I used my grandfather as the central figure in this book but this is not his biography. I used details of my grandfather’s life but added accounts of other people to tell a complete life story. My grandfather was not a person whose accomplishments would be in history books. However, his life is an example of a typical Polish immigrant. I felt that tying the information to one person would make a more interesting story and easier to show the impact of various events had on our ancestor's life. Our immigrant ancestors are the foundation of our roots in the United States. Our lives would be much different if they had not endured the challenges of emigration from Poland. Do not underestimate their contributions. They may have left us some material wealth but the most important contribution they left is their descendants and their role in the factories and farms of the United States. Their lives were building blocks in the growth of their new country.

Book is a good source for tracing prior generations from Poland to emigration to the United States during the late-19th & early-20th century. Helpful to me by analog, since I am the 2nd generation born in the U.S. who is of Polish descent.

Honest, Dark, Brutal--You'll love it!

Definitely need more of this! I have to disagree with a previous posted, though. I like my chamomile tea, but I also love heavy metal ;) I really don't see how ANYONE could hate this book! Or maybe I'm demented ;) I never could understand people who are so easily offended :) I preferred this dark, edgy, starkly frank style of poetry and the world needs more verse like this. It will make you feel something. That's what good poetry does. IMO, the best poetry if the kind that can make you feel something HARD. Not the wistful field of daisies type, but the, wow, that verse is like nails in my skin, like shrapnel in my heart, like glass particles in my brain. That may not sound very pleasant, but it makes you feel alive. It wakes you up to the world around you. This is REAL.

(PS: Don't worry, his poetry isn't as cheesy as my review. I'm a cornball. This is why I don't write poetry LOL)

Ok, so this is heavy metal which means if you think it's fun sitting around flipping through Emily Dickinson novels while you sip on a steaming hot cup of Chamomile tea...then you're going to HATE this book. But honestly, I always thought Dickinson as well as all the other formal BS we read in college was pretentious smut, so I liked "The Last Bastion of Hope."

Sure, there's not quite as much attention to meter in this collection of poems, but it's somebody's honest opinion at least. Actually, it's such a raw and honest opinion that it can, at times, even reflect poorly on the writer. I think it takes a certain amount of courage to publish something that has that effect.

This really feels like a passion project, so it's not in the least sense commercial. Frankly, I wish more people would publish stuff like this.

Bold and unapologetic, fantastic writing

The author labels this as song lyrics, but make no mistake, this is poetry! It's fantastic, profound poetry and deserves to be read and taken seriously. These words are brutal, unapologetic, raw, and controversial, and hidden under that aggressive madness is really important discussions regarding some big picture issues like religion, politics, and life itself! This is a great read that will leave you with that sobering, unsettling feeling that we all need a little bit of today!

Verbal Nitroglycerin!

This week I read half of Rintu Basu’s Persuasion Skills Black Book in one night. I said to myself, “Wow, this is incredible stuff! This is verbal nitroglycerin!” If your job entails debate and discussion, this book is for you. If you’re in sales, this book is an absolute must; you can forget all those How-to-Overcome-Obstacles-in-a-Sale books. If you want to utilize persuasion in your relationships, this book is for you. If you’re interested in NLP, this book is for you.

Rintu shows how to do persuasion patterns like Redefine (moving a conversation from one subject to another), Agreement (great for when you really don’t agree), and Pacing and Leading (making statements which are mutually believed to be true then making an important statement or question in which, after the previous “yes’s” from the person, they should also say “yes” to the important one). He also shows how the word “but” is bad, and the word “and” is good.

I purchased this book because I had bought Rintu’s other gem, Persuasion Skills Black Book of Job Hunting Techniques, a few weeks ago. In Job, you learn not only cutting edge techniques for a winning resume and job interview, you also learn confidence and attitude (which are massive elements needed in job searching.) I am considering a return to sales, and am returning to the singles’ world (thanks to divorce.) Thus, I became interested in relearning persuasion and learning more about NLP which I dabbled in in the mid 90s. I am very glad I bought both books!

The more you read this short, powerful book, the more you will realize it is very likely the best book ever written on persuasion. Imagine how great learning a fairly dry subject can be, when nearly each sentence in a chapter is itself an illustration the technique being taught, and how good it will feel when you notice that you feel comfortable using the material with just a little practice as a result. These techniques dramatically improved my results as a marketer, and helped me personally as well.

David Baldacci delivers another literary (and inspiring) adventure with THE KEEPER

The great thing about author David Baldacci is that he not only is able to entertain readers of all ages but he gives them things to think about like only a gifted storyteller could do. This definitely comes through in THE KEEPER, book 2 in the Vega Jane series.

We are able to see have Vega along with her friend Delph are not just fighting for freedom but for the truth. They soon realize that both could come at a price but that doesn't stop them on their quest. Along the way they are accompanies by individuals who also are looking for a way out and are willing to help, knowing full well what it might cost.

I love the fact that Vega is able to tell the story in her voice, because it reminds readers of all ages of the power they have and how through their actions they can be a part of the problem or the solution. It also showcases that just because things get rough doesn't mean that is time to give up. If anything that is the time to fight harder.

The last lesson I want to showcase in this review is that along her way Vega was never alone, even if she wasn't expecting to have help or assistance. This reminds us that when it comes to doing what is right there are always others willing to stand up and do their part. What great encouragement when times get hard!

A fun read with lots of lessons to receive and share, THE KEEPER is a great literary adventure

A great YA series from David Baldacci

The Keeper is the second book in the Vega Jane series by David Baldacci. I'm going to be honest, I had no idea that David Baldacci even wrote young adult books. I have read, and really enjoyed a few of his adult action thrillers, so I was pretty pumped when I saw there was a new young adult series out. The Keeper is the second book in the series, but it is promoted as being able to stand on its' own. And I think it does. That being said, I do still wish that I had read the first book, The Finisher, first. I wasn't really lost at all while reading the keeper, but I think I would have gotten a fuller picture of the characters had I read the books in their intended order.

The Finisher and the Keeper both follow the same main character- a girl named Vega Jane. I loved the atmosphere of the story. It was very intense, and had me flipping pages quickly. There is an air of desperation, as the main characters try and outwit the Quag and escape the village. I loved the world that David Baldacci created, which is why I am kicking myself even more for not reading The Finisher. I loved the magic and the creepy feeling of the Quag. It all made The Keeper seem much more fast paced and intense. I can easily see this turning into a blockbuster movie hit. I think it was written to be shown on a big screen.

These characters have a lot thrown at them, and this book is pretty lengthy. The kindle edition comes in at almost 500 pages, so there is plenty of time for multiple plot twists and road blocks. Personally, I am really into longer length books- especially when they are high stakes- like this one, because I love seeing the heroine overcome something big, just to be hit in the face with something else. (does that make me weird?) and I feel like there just isn't enough time for that to happen repeatedly in shorter books. I enjoyed my time spent reading The Keeper, and I can't wait to read The first book now. But don't be like me- read this series in order. I think you will appreciate it more that way.

Great Second Installment!

Big fan of David Baldacci. This book and the prequel stray from his typical genre and I was hesitant at the beginning to read the first...however, I'm happy that I gave both novels a chance and I couldn't wait for this installment to come out. The story is unique and the characters interesting and entertaining. The pace is not exactly break-neck, but it's steady and strong enough that you don't want to put the book down. Read it one day and now can't wait for the next installment. Highly recommend this book.

Richard Verhoeven works as a science journalist in Bremen.
