About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late 1960s, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. After graduation from the University of Texas he moved to south Florida, where he began to spend virtually all his leisure time messing about in boats.

In 1983 he abandoned a career in banking to devote more time to cruising and writing. His work combining these two passions soon began to appear in many popular sailing and boating magazines. In 1986 he co-authored Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, an immediate best-seller and the book responsible for pushing many would-be cruisers over the horizon. He is also author of This Old Boat, a universally praised guide that has led thousands of boatowners through the process of turning a rundown production boat into a first-class yacht, and of Sailboat Refinishing, Sailboat Hull & Deck Repair, Canvaswork & Sail Repair, and Inspecting the Aging Sailboat, all part of the International Marine Sailboat Library. He continues to evaluate old and new products and methods, often trying them on his own 30-year-old, much-modified, Allied Seawind.

When not writing or off cruising, he can be found sailing on Florida's Biscayne Bay.

Don Casey does it again

I own all of the books in the series. The only thing that bothers me is how smart Don Casey is. If you own any of his books, this one is the same but with canvas. There are projects from easy to more difficult (I'm a beginner) and a surprising number of them will be useful to most boaters/sailors.

This is a really handy book that will save you a lot of money. The work isn't difficult, you just have to remember that your are dealing with large pieces of fabric and not just sewing on a button.

Learn canvaswork and sail repair through stepped projects

Let me try to be a bit more balanced than "Deke." What Deke leaves out is that, right at the outset of this well-written and well-illustrated book, Casey states that the book is laid out as a graduated set of projects...starting from easy, "broadsheet" projects, which includes a bimini, stepping through more and more detailed projects...a well thought-out presentation that will overcome a laymen's anxieties about learning these new skills, and overcoming our own "Nay-saying." I've talked to a number of sailors that do their own canvas work, and they all say the biggest hurdle is telling ourselves we dont know how and we can't do it. This book breaks that nay-sayer's ice...start small, get used to the machine by doing things like duffle bags and winch and bumper covers...and graduate to bigger and more involved projects. Any skill like this comes from hands-on DOING, so I really don't get what Deke's expecting out of a book...you're not going to end up a Journeyman canvas-worker from a book...just get a machine (FS-288Z...a clone of the LSZ-1!)...and dig in.

About the Author

Christian Schuh is the leader of A.T. Kearney’s European Procurement Practice and founder of the firm’s high tech office in Taipei. He is based in Vienna, Austria. Since joining the firm in 1995, he has led an array of projects for clients in the automotive, construction equipment, defense, high tech, packaging, and steel industries in Austria, China, France, Germany, Russia, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and the United States. His areas of expertise include strategic sourcing, product development, and organization and he has written several books, monographs, and articles. Before joining A.T. Kearney, he worked for Unilever for several years. Christian studied aeronautical engineering and earned a doctorate degree in business administration from the Graz University of Technology in Austria. He lives in the historic city center of Vienna.

Joseph L.� Raudabaugh is the founder and global leader of A.T. Kearney’s Procurement & Analytic Solutions Practice and is based in Chicago. Since joining the firm in 1984, he has led projects for clients in the brewing, construction equipment, consumer products, direct marketing, food ingredients, healthcare, industrial products, pharmaceutical, and specialty retail industries in North America, China, Europe, India, Japan, and South America. His areas of expertise include supply management, strategy, and organizational development, and he is the author of various monographs and articles. Joe is the co-founder of A.T. Kearney’s Student Lab, a program that connects more than 45 clients with students and faculty from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, MIT, and UCLA’s Anderson School of Business to address operations and strategic business projects in an experiential learning model. Before joining A.T. Kearney, Joe worked for Air Products and Chemicals for several years. He studied economics and operations research at North Carolina State University and earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Robert Kromoser has been with A.T. Kearney since 1998. He is based in Vienna, Austria, but gained most of his consulting experience during international projects in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, France, Italy, Great Britain, Taiwan, and the United States. He is a member of the leadership team of A.T. Alenka Triplat is a member of A.T. Kearney’s Operations Practice. About the Author

Juan Martinez began working for the Maricopa County Attorney’s office in 1988. In his twenty-seven-year career with the office, he has spent nineteen years prosecuting homicide cases. Some of his most noteworthy cases include Arizona v. Wendi Andriano, who was convicted of first-degree murder and was the first woman sentenced to death by a jury in Arizona; Arizona v. Scott Falater, which was noted for the use of sleepwalking as a defense to the murder of his wife; Arizona v. Loren Wade, in which an Arizona State University football player was convicted of the shooting murder of an ex-ASU football player; and Arizona v. Rick Wayne Valentini, which resulted in a conviction for murder even though the victim’s body was never found.

It was amazing to read how Martinez was able to pull off ...

I preordered this book and inhaled it from start to finish in one sitting. I followed the Arias trial from opening statements to her sentencing, becoming an admirer of Juan Martinez' due to his apparent photographic memory and knowledge of all the evidence and his skillful and relentless courtroom style as he won justice for Travis Alexander and his family and friends.

It was amazing to read how Martinez was able to pull off a couple of true "Perry Mason" moments during the trial. He shares how he came across the infamous gas can evidence in the form of a collection of receipts in a shoebox in Arias' room at her grandparent's home in Yreka, California. Arias had made sure she "had the gas receipts" to prove she was “nowhere near” Mesa, Arizona and the murder. However, Martinez famously produced the gas receipts from California and Salt Lake City with the accompanying bank records proving that she had 3 gas cans.. And having 3 gas cans was indicative of premeditation—therefore knocking self-defense off the table.

He sheds light on the so-called “pedophile letters” that were discussed in a hearing but never admitted as evidence in the trial. The utter unprofessionalism and dishonesty that most people observed by the Arias defense team during the trial was proven to be accurate when Martinez discloses that Nurmi , a female defense attorney and an investigator showed up unannounced (and unidentified as Arias’ defense team) to Deanna Reid’s home purporting to be people “involved in the case” who wanted to ask some questions about Travis “off the record.” The female defense attorney tried to be “chummy” with Deanna and produced one of the forged “pedophile letters’ for her to read which also contained unflattering things about Deanna. Deanna immediately saw the letters for what they were: forgeries by Jodi Arias. These letters were described by Nurmi as “100% verified” when he tried this same farce with Chris and Sky Hughes. This information proves without a doubt that Arias’ defense team MOST CERTAINLY DID attempt to argue that Travis was a pedophile—something that both Nurmi and Willmott pathetically and disingenuously tried to deny once the trial was over.

I enjoyed reading the few personal things that Martinez shared about the work he does—the fact that he never eats or drinks in his office so he doesn’t spill anything on court documents; his beginnings in Victorville, California and his immaculate work ethic.

It was fascinating to read the truth behind the circus that was Jodi Arias—all her combativeness, smug condescension, lies, mischaracterizations and absurd attempts at playing the demure victim from the prosecutor’s point of view.

While Martinez relates that he was criticized a great deal by the media and some trial watchers, it has been my experience that he is widely appreciated and admired for having the guts to not allow Arias to get away with her lies and ultimately, first degree, premeditated murder.

I had been anticipating the release of this book and read it in one gulp! Conviction is informative, well written with the integrity and dedication of Juan Martinez apparent throughout. This is a guy who works 13 hour days , works alone and becomes immersed in his cases because he seeks the deliverance of justice to people just like Jodi Arias. The revelation of the gas cans and their significance, dealing with the Bob White letters and observations about how to best tackle the unconscionable liar that was Ms Arias, all make for entertaining reading. My only real criticisms of the book were that I would have liked a little more on the penalty retrial and the controversy surrounding Juror 17 and a bit more dirt on the often fiery interaction between the prosecution and the defence that resulted in those endless bench conferences!. But gossip is not what Conviction is about-its about getting Arias where she should be and that is what Martinez did. I would also advise those that are J A trial diehards that a lot of the book consists of transcribed court testimony, police interviews and other material that you may be familiar with already which is another reason why its a 4 stars for me. Worth a read to see how a hard working prosecutor goes about getting the job done

As Much History as There Is

The first big problem with any history of the Vikings is that they hardly wrote anything down (using stones for paper will do that). What we know comes primarily either (1) from the peoples they attacked (can we rely on the monks at Lindisfarne for a deep and thorough survey?) or (2) from sagas written a century after the Viking era had really ended. The second big problem is that the Vikings didn't have a coherent cultural and social touchstone in the form of, say, the Christian religion, so trying to generalize or make statements about all Vikings is difficult. So historians are reduced to writing (1) "Here's what particular people said about the Vikings," and (2) "Here's what particular Vikings did." Mr. Ferguson has done that as well as I think anyone could, and there is just a ton of great information in this book.

The only problem with the book, in my opinion, is that the author tends to ramble a bit, and the narrative is somewhat disorganized. It brought to mind a fireside conversation with a professor who is extremely well versed on the subject but also inclined to go off on tangents a bit. I actually bought this twice -- in paperback and as an audiobook -- and I had a bit of trouble getting into the paperback. It sat on my shelf for a long time. Listening to the audiobook--which I did during my lengthy daily commute--was much better.

My only gripe about the product is that it is written (and thus read) like a college senior's text book

This is a lengthy and thorough lecture on the history of the Vikings, and how they effected Europe. The text is very detailed, and multiple points of view are explored when appropriate. My only gripe about the product is that it is written (and thus read) like a college senior's text book; the language is very much geared toward an educated audience. This makes the facts a little difficult to follow at times

About the Author
Peter Tannenbaum earned his�bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and Political Science and his PhD in Mathematics from the University of California–Santa Barbara. He has held faculty positions at the University of Arizona, Universidad Simon Bolivar (Venezuela), and is�professor emeritus of mathematics at the California State University–Fresno. His research examines the interface between mathematics, politics, and behavioral economics. He has been involved in mathematics curriculum reform and teacher preparation. His hobbies are travel, foreign languages and sports. He is married to Sally Tannenbaum, a professor of communication at CSU Fresno, and is the father of three (twin sons and a daughter).

Content and Variety of Math Applications

First, please notice the other reviewer seemed to be upset about their shipping mishap, not the book. Don't you hate it when someone confuses their purchase experience with the book content, then describes the book content in terms of their purchase experience?!?!

I have taken many college math courses, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Calculus was the only one that had some application to the real world, until the Modern Math class which used this book.

The first chapter starts out with preference ballots, which is relevant in our world of 3rd party candidates stealing elections (think Nader and Perot). It is interesting to see how many voting systems can be applied with varying winners and fairness. After elections and weighted ballots, you learn about Fibonacci Numbers, Golden Ratio, Gnomons, and Spiral growths. Population growth math is explored, as is fractals, symmetry, geometry, statistics, probabilities, and distributions.

Everyone in my class remarked on how much they actually enjoyed the course and the actual textbook. This textbook is extremely easy to read and use, with many colorful pictures, graphs, and side notes. The sections are very easy to digest because they are short and sweet, usually covering one concept per section.

I recommend this book for anyone who is simply interested in the real-world application of math, not just those taking a course which requires this book. There is a student solutions manual sold separately, but don't bother. This book has all the odd answers in the back, and it is not terribly difficult anyways. It is just challenging enough to still be interesting.

A great text that is almost identical in the last 4-5 editions

I have used this text through four editions as the basis of a non-majors survey math course. It is great for students at different points on the geometry-algebra-calculus sequence, because none of them has likely seen the material before (well, maybe the probability and stats) and the demands for symbolic manipulation are low. However the algorithmic nature of the problems still presents interesting intellectual challenges. I do have one huge gripe with the publisher (not the author); this is a superb example of using trivial edition updates to kill the used text market. It is quite easy to teach students with anywhere from editions 5-8 (and maybe more) by just choosing problem sets for homework that are common to all the editions (and many, if not most, of them are, with differences in numbering). Pearson seems to be changing the cover and making tiny tweaks in an effort to get everyone to buy a new (and expensive) text. It's pretty comical; I can send students to an example in the chapter, and it is almost always identical and numbered the same! So instructors, definitely consider using this text, but let your students get a slightly older edition cheap on the used market; it will cost you little effort to save them a ton of $$$.
