Ivan Cury is a professor in the Communication Department of California State University, Los Angeles, where he has taught for the past fifteen years. He is also a producer and director of commercials, sitcoms, variety shows, documentaries, and daytime dramas such as The Young and the Restless. He has served as a judge for the Emmy's ACE and for the DGA awards. Before joining the department at Cal State, he taught for eleven years in the MPTV department at UCLA.

Very clear and precise for the unexperienced tv professional

As a first time TV show co-producer, I wanted a simple approach on learning the basics of TV directing and producing. This book has given me everything I needed to start understanding the technical aspects of the business. Now I can express my ideas more clearly to the show director and the crew, and even though this is not my primary career this book has made easier my introduction in the business.

A waste of paper. This book is old info and lots of useless filler. IMO, almost completely uselss. Don't waste your time and money.

Best option after hands on with Ivan himself

Ivan Cury also taught courses in Directing for TV at UCLA and UCLA Extension.
My short time with him as a student in that curriculum prepared me as almost no other schooling has. The book not only features a condensation of his best advice but also a series of mind excercises one must bring to the craft in order to keep up. All of this is in addition to the typical textbook description of the directing environment, complete with extensive descriptions of who's who in the studio and in the control room.
Although the book concentrates mostly on the multi-camera environment, Cury applies the right mix of film style production instruction as well.
Ivan Cury's sections about budgeting and dealing with crews are invaluable and the step by step guides leave no questions unanswered.
Cury lays out the ropes and the laws of the land in easy to digest and logical bites, and instead of centering chiefly on the tools, his course concentrates on the creative palette and the canvas in the mind of the director, although this latest edition brings even the seasoned journeyman an update on the latest trends in digital video.
Cury makes sure that the inexperienced beginner knows what to expect in the production setting.

Outside of attending one of Cury's courses in person I give this book my highest recommendation.

About the Author
Martin L. Leibowitz is a managing director in the research department at Morgan Stanley. For the prior nine years, he was with TIAA-CREF, the world's largest pension fund, where as chief investment officer he oversaw $300 billion in assets. Dr. Leibowitz is the author of five books and numerous articles, and winner of multiple Financial Analysts Journal Graham and Dodd Awards for his work analyzing equities and fixed-income investments.

Sidney Homer, who died in 1983, was the founder and general partner in charge of Salomon Brothers' bond market research department. Best known for his pioneering and analytical studies of bond market history and relative values and the economic forces which create bond market trends, he is the author of several books including A History of Interest Rates, The Bond Buyer's Primer, and The Price of Money.

A Great Introduction to Bonds

This is the best introduction I have seen on bond buying. It was recommended by Jeffrey Gundlach, the reigning king of bonds. It is much more comprehensive than anything you will find in financial textbooks, is easy to read, and very practical.

This is the best series of spelling workbooks that I've found!

As a homeschooling mom, teaching multiple grades, this book is perfect! I have purchased 3 other spelling books in the past, all of which had layouts that I really didn't care for and my children found unclear and boring. I always wound up making my own worksheets. I was a little nervous buying this one, and worried that it would be another dud, but in fact, it is wonderful. It has a very clear design that breaks down the lessons very well. It gives the kids wonderful practice that they enjoy. I couldn't be happier that I have finally found a great spelling book series for my kids. And it has saved me a ton of time!

Until now, nothing seems to help my son with spelling. However, he really likes this book. His enjoyment of it goes A LONG WAY in the effort to help him. He likes the system and therefore doesn't dread doing his spelling. Thank you

A great spelling program for individual levels.

A nice spelling workbook that I use in my classroom where each student is on a different spelling level. It offers common grade level spelling words with practice and various activities. It also offers a master copy of each spelling list that you can copy and give to students to study off of. I have used these books with my students for 8 years and I will continue to use them.

a refreshing and reassuring read

What a refreshing change to read a parenting book that's based on research rather than just someone's opinion (who claims to have all the answers because they've either had lots of children or worked with children!).

This was a very reassuring read for me as it gave justification for a lot of the decisions I have already made with respect to my two children (aged 9months and 3years) on everything from getting them to sleep, to returning to work. I would recommend it to any new parents. You meet so many opinionated people along the way whilst raising children and are constantly being given completely conflicting information. As an example, I was told that you should never leave a child to cry as they can end up at higher risk of suffering from depression and suicide in adulthood, but also, if you never leave them to cry they never learn to settle themselves and end up with chronic sleep problems which can them lead to....higher risk of suicide and depression in adulthood??!

There is more often than not, no one right answer when it comes to parenting decisions, and what sets this book apart is that it doesn't give a set of answers. Various strategies are discussed, and an examination of the current research is used in an attempt to identify the better strategies.

This is an easy book to recommend.

I'm probably not the ideal person to comment on this book since I don't have children of my own, but it's so well written that I wanted to add my two cents of support for the author. This is an easy to read guide to make sense of parenthood. There is a good bit of research provided as supporting documentation, but there is also provides plenty of tangible advice, and easy to follow examples throughout the book. I think it's also good to know that you don't have to follow the precise flow of the book to gain the full benefits. If there is a particular area of concern, for example potty training or sibling rivalry, the format of the book makes it easy to find helpful answers. This is an easy book to recommend.

have only read 2 chapters so far, but very interesting

Will update later on when I've delved more into this book. The author offers many helpful ideas, gives examples backed by research etc. So far I like it and have implemented a couple of her suggestions that have actually worked one of which is, letting my daughter "lead" in playtime as I follow along instead of telling her what to play with next. She really enjoyed when I imitated her ^_^

I had an earlier version of Macbook for Dummies, and am very glad I bought this new version, which tells about all then new cool features with the newest operating system, El Capitan. I don't have a Macbook Pro YET, but I bought this book and the earlier version several years ago specifically to familiarize myself with Apple laptops before buying one. This is very well written, and easy to understand. Mark L. Chambers is one of my favorite Dummies writers for Apple products. I recommend this new version of Macbook for Dummies.
