Great resource, but perhaps needs a new edition

I love this book a lot, but my concern is that (from what I've seen) there is not an updated version of this. There is a lot of research out on different illnesses with pets now, and I think this book could benefit from coming out with a new edition. That being said, it's a great resource for general knowledge at home or in a vet's office. I love that they have a section included for large animals and exotics. I don't work with those directly, but I enjoyed reading up about it.

An excellent start to a new Shifter series

I’ve been waiting for Sawyer’s story for awhile now. Grizzly Flying High starts off the new shifter series, Air Bear Shifters, one that mentions and connects with the Ice Bears and the Fire Bears shifters. If you’ve been following Ms Meyers’ series then you will have heard of the Frost Peak Grizzlies clan, and of Sawyer since he is their Alpha and is instrumental in their safety and survival.

Sawyer is one overworked Alpha. While he watches friends find their mates and settle into mated bliss – he’s still alone. His clan comes before everything else in his life, even his own happiness. So while on a tour trip, hanging out at the hotel bar while his clients do whatever they do at this resort, a beautiful woman sits down at the bar beside him. He’s used to females coming on to him and he really wanted that bar stool to stay opened with no one entering his space. But for once the lady is more interested in food and drink than she is in him – at first at least.

Amanda simply wanted a good meal and a drink – and since the hostel where she was supposed to be breaking her wilderness trip at screwed up her reservation, she would enjoy this perk of a very nice hotel and all that comes with it. She loved what she was doing right now. Hiking across the beauty of Alaska, just one of the states she planned on exploring as she redefined herself. Gone was the corporate executive, wasting away in an office and never truly living – now she was finding out exactly who she was, and she was loving the experience. And to be quite honest, the handsome guy next to her was good company – okay, so maybe he had some keep away vibes coming off of him at first, but she was having fun talking and lightly flirting with him – he seemed… right somehow.

So maybe it wasn’t such a hardship to talk and yes, flirt a bit with the beautiful woman beside him. Sawyer knew that there was something about her, something that pulled at him. But he stamped that feeling down, his clan needed his attention on them right now and while it was tempting to make some moves on this willing lady – it wasn’t wise. Once again clan came before his own needs – and did she ever awaken needs in him.

So begins Sawyer and Amanda’s romance in Grizzly Flying High. I really enjoyed this beginning of the next series, kind of like visiting with old friends that you lost touch with for a bit. We’ve known the surface of Sawyer’s life, now we get to know the man and the heavy responsibilities that he carries. He needs his mate, and Amanda is his. Now they have to work out the what’s more important parts – freedom, responsibility or personal needs, desires and a life mate that could help balance it all.

There are some big decisions coming for them both and their eventual happiness is at stake. If you love Shifter Romance and enjoy a solid, good base story that opens up such possibilities to come – then I think adding Grizzly Flying High to your reading list would be an excellent move.

Grizzly flying high is amazing ! I really loved the characters of the book .I loved the pretending to be the boyfriend part of it , that made me laugh .I love Sloane Meyers books ! You get lost in the fictional world of bear shifters, which is better than a world where bear shifter do not exist

Loved it. Sawyer is pretty amazing. He is a very fair alpha. His mate is pretty interesting too. I can't wait to read more about this clan!

Joan Didion doesn't want you to know this...

...but Run River is her finest novel. "Democracy" is excellent, but it is more a tour de force than a novel. Didion was only in her twenties when she wrote Run River, and it is a winner--stylish but never mannered (something you can't say about her subsequent novels), subdued, witty, assured, and filled with Valley (as in the Sacramento Valley) characters with whom Didion was rather obsessively in love. It is a pity that she seems more interested these days in writing about Washington insiders for N.Y.C./L.A. insiders. Everett McClellan, my favorite character in the book, would not have been able to sustain an interest in such figures as Henry Hyde and Kenneth Starr. That Didion can--even if only for the purpose of eviscerating them--is an indication of how far she has strayed from her literary roots. Ah, but what roots they were. Run River is an extraordinary achievement.

A Californian Elegy

This novel is early Didion, wonderfully lyrical and dark, passionate without sentimentality, and beyond conclusions. It is homage to James Jones, to William Faulkner, perhaps a little to John Steinbeck, but mostly to a California now almost vanished. That California is mostly the settlers' California, but it is also a California felt and known aboriginally. She writes, as always, poignantly about things dying away: but the heirs live on and the Californian sun and hills, rivers and floods, carry on- the part of eternity we can know a little of. I liked this book very much, but the reader should be warned it is not a light read and not written as completely in Joan Didion's famously sharp style as her later works.

As Good a First Novel as First Novels Get

This first novel by one of modern America's prose-writing treasures is set in a part of California no one associates with the Golden State: the Sacramento Delta. The emotional and physical geography of the book blend seamlessly. Didion has since critiqued this book herself, in her much later prose reflection on California, "Where I Was From." She's a bit hard on her former self. This is a lucid, hard etched short novel on the same general theme as Tolstoi's "Anna Karenina": that is, how a uniquely unhappy family got that way. Didion is of an old California family. She takes no false pride in that, here or elsewhere. There is not a useless or spongy sentence in the whole book. Writers will be reminded of what they're supposed to be doing when they pick up a pen.
