Amazon.com Review
An unexpected bestseller, this self-help book for women who want to hook a man seems to have struck a chord with desperate American women. Fein and Schneider, whose main credentials seem to be that they are married, lay out the rules to be followed for successfully snagging a dream hunk. And these rules are hard as cast-iron--Rule Five: Don't Call Him and Rarely Return His Calls. The idea is to return to pre-feminist mind games, exploiting the male hunting urge by playing hard to get. The result seems unliberating--Rule Seventeen: Let Him Take the Lead--but it seems to be capturing female minds. Rules Girls are eyeing the phone with steely resolve, and Rules seminars are springing up nationwide. Curious bachelors have been observed studying The Rules, some frowning, others with the supercilious smile of the hunter.

I would give The Rules triple the number of stars that are available and then some more stars! It might be a very old book with ideas that seem odd to the modern generation BUT they do work! If you use them ~ they work! If you slip up and stop using them ~ you will soon see the difference in your partner~ so ladies ~ get this book ~ memorize this book~ and enjoy the benefits of being a Rules Woman!!!! This book is not just a 'to get a husband' book ~ it is ever so much more! It is how to ensure that you are respected and valued every day ~ as you should be!

Very Pratical
By Cakey
Yes, the book is written mainly for women who are interested in finding the perfect husband. However, for every time the authors tell you to wait before responding to a man or limit the number of dates you have with him every week, there is an equal amount of effort dedicated to the theme of "don't just say you're busy, BE busy." Obviously it won't be possible to have an engagement every single Friday and Saturday night for the rest of your life (at least, it isn't for me), and sometimes you may have to keep the truth from the guy you're dating to maintain the impression that you're a social butterfly and thus be more appealing to him. I honestly don't see the harm in this: if being alone on a Friday night bothers you, then wouldn't it be even worse to advertise it to the men you're dating? And also: it's really none of his business what you're doing when you're not with him while you're still casually dating.

The way I see it, the rules are strung together with a very important thread, and that's the idea of women taking care of themselves, whether it be superficial (physical pampering), spiritual (doing yoga, meditation or anything else that makes YOU feel happy), and social (engaging in healthy romantic relationships). So for everybody who's saying this book is anti-feminist, I'll have to respectfully disagree. "Twilight" is a book about damsels in distress; "The Rules" isn't. The rules simply encourage you to be a challenge for the next guy who comes along, and I see nothing wrong with this. Yes, it really sucks that dating has to be a game, but at least in the beginning I believe that's the truth and everybody who's dying to open up and be honest about EVERYTHING (myself including) just has to suck it up and get through to the next stage...

Was it really that helpful?
By Athy
Was it really that helpful?

I personally found the book not too helpful. It did give me a few tips on what to do in certain situations and it did give me an insight into how men think and how men treat this "dating game." However, I ultimately have to agree with the other reviewers, everyone is different and it is really hard to conform to this "mold" that this book gives you. Many of the steps/advice in this book may get the man you like to completely lose interest in you. However, I did find the ultimate theme/statement of the book helpful: When you are dating someone, remember that you still have to respect yourself and make sure you don't lose your own life while pursuing someone else. That is the one bit of advice that I still follow; it makes me not only independent, but it shows my significant other that I have my own personality and individuality and I will never lose that no matter who I am with. This, in and of itself, is a very attractive trait to men.

- - - - - -

Obviously the book has its pros and cons besides what I said above. I have a couple of gripes about it but I do have some positive feedback for it in addition to my general feedback above:

PROS
1) This book really emphasizes on being who you are and never losing your own personal life. I think this is really good advice for any woman to take. Throughout the book, it tells you ways to keep busy, things to do before a date, and methods to keep your mind off of a man. This, I think, is the ultimate respect you can give yourself.

2) Many of the methods in this book can work, if you do it right and if you do it in low dosages. (Or if you are brave enough to even do them at all). Personally, it takes a lot of self control to get to that point, which is tough, but if done correctly I do think there are definitely beneficial effects to your relationship.

3) Personally, I have a relatively low self esteem. Reading and rereading this book at times when I feel really miserable or I feel like I'm "cracking" (in terms of self control: not calling him so often, not texting him, etc.) really helps boost my mood up for some reason. It tells me what people usually don't tell each other, that we are "worth it" and we need to focus on ourselves first and foremost.

CONS
1) It is needless to say that this book is a bit outdated. It tells you to do things like ignore his calls, or if you miss his voice, call him and get his voicemail to hear his voice. Nowadays, it is not very possible to do such things. With technology such as caller ID, text messaging, etc. you can't ignore someone's phone calls for 2 days. You also can't ignore someone's text message for two days. Additionally, there's no way you can call constantly to hear his voicemail because it will say 23 missed calls from you on his cell phone (already a sign for him to stay away from you).

2) As I mentioned earlier, the tips in this book conform to a mold, given that the man you are trying this on is the same type of men they are talking about in the book. I would actually estimate about 30-50% of men in the world do not actually conform to that mold. Which means that this will not work with everyone. This also means that if you really like someone, think before you do the methods mentioned in the book because it may be qualities that make them turned off you!

3) The tricks and tactics in this book are only "tricks" in my opinion. They psychologically "trick" the man into liking you. In this way, I do not think that it's a very truthful approach to dating, nor is it a sustainable method in a long term relationship. Since this book aims to get you a good man to marry, it seems only good up to that point. Unfortunately after you are with someone for a really long time, no matter what "tricks" you did to get him in the beginning, after 10-20 years of marriage, it won't really have that much affect on him anymore. Sure, he'll be completely into you for the first couple of years of marriage but eventually it's going to fade and you're going to have to depend on your own self and personality to keep him interested.

- - - - - -

I would recommend this book for a fun read, but I wouldn't take it too seriously. I wouldn't follow the rules word for word, they are more like guidelines rather. After reading this book, I actually found a couple of other books that I feel are more helpful in giving insight to the man's mind as well as how a female can cope with that in their own ways:

-He's Just Not that Into you -- by Greg Berendt. Yes this book may sound frivolous but it is also a fun read, and rather than tell you what to do, it gives you signs that he's not that into you (which is always helpful)

-The Secrets of Happily Married Women: How to get More out of your relationship by doing less -- by Scott Haltzman MD and Theresa Foy DiGeronimo. This book was it for me. For some reason, all of my relationship problems were mentioned in this book, and it really gave me deep insight on how a man's mind works and how to approach it and make your relationship better. I think that this book was more helpful than the "Rules" book. Even though this book is about marriage, you can read it and it would still apply to any relationship.

-Why Men Want Sex and Women Need Love: Solving the Mystery of Attraction -- by Barbara Pease and Allan Pease. This book is a more scientific approach on the female/male mind. Understanding the effects of the chemicals in our brain is really helpful to understanding the differences between the male/female mind. Plus, there are a lot of interesting facts/statistics in here that are really helpful to know. With any amount of deduction, you will be able to understand the underlying messages and will know how to approach dating situations.

Review
Meyer writes a valuable and convincing primer on what Buddhists would call "mindfulness" from a dedicated Christian perspective. Using a rich scriptural context, she convinces listeners " to think what you are thinking about." Filled with many anecdotes from ministry, her points are made in a accessible and personable style. The psychology is sound though ensconced in conservative Christian language. Happily, Meyers encourages meditation, both on scripture and in prayer as a way to be in the moment.

Our Minds---Rethinking Time
By Kindle Customer
Joyce Meyer is a talented, dedicated warrior. She has undergone many of the same trials that each person has endured. When you study her insights you really start understanding what you say is how you live. When I was younger, a stay at home mom, I would say that my family was just like the soap opera All My Children. We had one crisis after another. Then I listened to Mrs. Meyer's teaching. I quit making the negative statements and watched my family return to peace. The Battle is in our minds.. The weapons are the Words that we think then speak. One has to change how you think so that the speech you hear will lift upward, not squash you.

The mind of Christ
By Amazon Customer
I am so grateful for this book! My sister recommended it to me and when I got it I couldn't put it down and I cried almost all the way through. It spoke to me so very deeply and I took note of all the scriptures that confirmed what I was reading. I have since been slowly letting go of things that have bugged and bothered me for YEARS. I am slowly, daily, reminding myself to have the MIND OF CHRIST. Life has become less lonely and I look forward with new hope each day for a good future...not thinking all the time of just growing old and not looking for an exciting fruitful future!!
Thank the Lord for Joyce Meyer's ministry and for showing me a way OUT of my bad mind set!! I have recommended it to many people since reading it.

There's a God on the Mic: The True 50 Greatest MCs, by Kool Mo Dee, Kool Mo Dee

Rapper Kool Mo Dee thrived during hip-hop's nascent years as a vocalist whose tongue-twisting rhymes and speedy delivery put his counterparts to shame. On his 1987 album, How Ya Like Me Now, Kool came up with a ‘hip-hop report card': a method of rating MCs (Emcees, Masters of Ceremonies, Master Communicators, or rap vocalists) as a way of separating the premier MCs from their often one-dimensional, overrated counterparts ("Sucka MCs"). Building on this original list, Kool has put together an extensive rating system to compile the definitive list of the greatest MCs of all time. Kool rates each MC based on seventeen different categories, ranging from the artist's lyricism, vocabulary, and freestyling ability to his longevity, body of work, and social impact. Each artist is given a numerical score from one to ten in each of the seventeen categories, as well as an explanation for how this rating was determined. The book includes a complete discography and full-color photograph for each MC, and will also have supplemental lists, such as the top ten storytellers and top ten rhymers.

Great Conversation Piece
By G. E. Merkison
If you are between 40 and 60, you were a the party during the dawn of Hip Hop. If you are a fan of Rap, you will enjoy this book. Most likely, you will disagree with the inclusions, exclusions, and placement of Koo Mo Dee's choices but you'll find this book interesting.

I take into account that the author did not smoke, drink, or do drugs, which makes him unique in comparison to other rappers then and now.

not quite
By castopoe
even though i respect moe dee because of his skills and he was one of the greats when i was coming up i disagreed with alot of his choices and his order. thats not a problem because i'm sure he wrote it to spark debate and to get a dialogue going about the art of the mc. some of the writing becomes monotonous and i find him saying alot of the same things about mcs. even for this list being old(2003) i didnt think he captured some of the great mc's of the time. craig mack top 50? not at any point of his life Moe. SHOOK MY HEAD AT THAT ONE!!! its a good read and like i said a better dialogue starter.

Top notch book from a rap legend. He methodically dissects the MCs yet in an entertaining manner. I really enjoyed the book. A great documentary work.

This is is one you'll want to hand down to your kids. Would have liked to have a hardcover version of it.

Review

"Navigating English Grammar is a superb introduction to English grammar and grammatical analysis. Lobeck and Denham guide readers through the essentials of English with vivid, up-to-date usage examples and just the right amount of clearly explained linguistic theory." – Edwin Battistella, Southern Oregon University

“Lobeck and Denham make a plausible Socrates, prodding their interlocutors into discovering their own, internal language system.  Readers learn much about scientific methods, honed by years working in schools and understanding adolescent minds, and are liberated from foolish social judgments about people's language.” – David Lightfoot, Georgetown University

From the Back Cover
While most grammar books start and stop with an explanation of parts of speech and sentence structure, Navigating English Grammar goes a step further to provide an overview of the field, with a discussion of historical and current debates about grammar, and how we define, discuss, and approach it.

The authors use grammar as a springboard to discuss semantics and morphology; how usage and sentence structure affects style in writing; abbreviated style in the digital age; and the syntax of poetry, fiction, and other genres. Along the way they give examples and analysis of texts. Among other controversies, the authors delve into the sociopolitical aspects of grammar rules, the subjectivity of pet peeves and grammar police, the changing ways grammar has been taught, and how assessment and a changing educational climate has influenced this. They also lay out the fascinating history of the linguistic tradition, from the Sanskrit grammar of Panini (c. 520-460 BCE), sometimes considered a founder of linguistics, to the ancient Greeks, the development of the Western tradition, and through the rise of ’correct’ English grammar in the 17th century to the present day.

Navigating English Grammar is an engaging and fresh take on the rules and the politics of English grammar, written in lively, inviting prose.

The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease, by Daniel Lieberman

In this landmark book of popular science, Daniel E. Lieberman gives us a lucid and engaging account of how the human body evolved over millions of years. He illuminates the major transformations that contributed to key adaptations to the body: the rise of bipedalism; the shift to a non-fruit-based diet; the advent of hunting and gathering; and how cultural changes like the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions have impacted us physically. He shows how the increasing disparity between the jumble of adaptations in our Stone Age bodies and advancements in the modern world is occasioning a paradox: greater longevity but increased chronic disease. And finally—provocatively—he advocates the use of evolutionary information to help nudge, push, and sometimes even compel us to create a more salubrious environment and pursue better lifestyles.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In thoroughly enjoyable and edifying prose, Lieberman, professor of human evolution at Harvard, leads a fascinating journey through human evolution. He comprehensively explains how evolutionary forces have shaped the human species as we know it, from the move to bipedalism, and the changes in body parts—from hands to feet and spine—that such a change entailed, to the creation of agrarian societies, and much more. He balances a historical perspective with a contemporary one—examining traits of our ancestors as carefully as he looks to the future—while asking how we might control the destiny of our species. He argues persuasively that cultural evolution is now the dominant force of evolutionary change acting on the human body, and focuses on what he calls mismatch diseases that are caused by lack of congruence between genes and environment. Since the pace of cultural evolution has outstripped that of biological evolution, mismatch diseases have increased to the point where most of us are likely to die of such causes. Lieberman's discussion of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and breast cancer are as clear as any yet published, and he offers a well-articulated case for why an evolutionary perspective can greatly enrich the practice of medicine. Agent: Max Brockman, Brockman Inc. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Like it or not, we are slightly fat, furless, bipedal primates who crave sugar, salt, fat, and starch. Harvard professor Lieberman holds nothing back in his plea that people listen to the story of human evolution consisting of five biological transformations (walking upright, eating a variety of different foods, accumulating physical traits aligned to hunting and gathering, gaining bigger brains with larger bodies, and developing unique capacities for cooperation and language) and two cultural ones (farming and reliance on machines). Unfortunately, human beings now create environments and presently practice lifestyles that are clearly out of sync with the bodies they’ve inherited. This mismatch results in myriad problems, including Type 2 diabetes, myopia, flat feet, and cavities. Lieberman cleverly and comprehensively points out the perils of possessing Paleolithic anatomy and physiology in a modern world and bemoans just how out of touch we have become with our bodies. Natural selection nudges all life-forms toward optimality rather than a state of perfection. If we want to continue our phenomenal run as a species, it is essential to understand (and embrace) our evolutionary legacy. --Tony Miksanek

Review
“Monumental . . . an epic voyage that reveals how the past six million years shaped every part of us—our heads, limbs, and even our metabolism. . . . Through Lieberman’s eyes, evolutionary history not only comes alive, it becomes the means to understand, and ultimately influence, our body’s future.”
—Neil Shubin, author of Your Inner Fish

“Fascinating. . . . A readable introduction to the whole field and great on the making of our physicality.”
—Nature

“Sweeping. . . . Convincingly makes the case for a wholesale rethinking of how we live our modern lives.’”
—CommonHealth, WBUR

“Riveting, enlightening, and more than a little frightening. . . . No one understands the human body like Daniel Lieberman or tells its story more eloquently.”
—Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run

“These are not debates to gloss over or reduce to simple statements of cause and effect—they are stories with scientific complexity and tremendous, sometimes contradictory accumulations of evidence and detail. The Story of the Human Body does full justice to those stories, to that evidence and to that detail, and brings them to bear on daily health and well-being, individual and collective.”
—The Washington Post

“[Lieberman] is a true expert in a system where architecture and history intersect: the human foot. He ably describes how behavior and anatomy can lead to foot injuries in long-distance runners.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“The ultimate science-based Paleo investigation. . . . Convincing. . . . A great read, and I recommend it highly for those of you who are interested in learning the facts about our biological roots, and how we can rationally apply ‘Paleo’ concepts to prevent and reverse modern ‘mismatch’ diseases.”
—Dr. Ronald Hoffman, The Hoffman Center/Health Talk

“Eloquent and precise . . . Lieberman is the first to point out that modern living and technology have made our lives better in many ways. Still, a look back at where we came from can tell us a lot about where we’re headed, he says—and how we might alter that course for the better.”
—Grist

“A doozy. . . . That humans are poorly adapted to our modern lifestyle of convenience foods, flat screens, and desk jobs isn’t very controversial. But how we best cope with this new reality often is. Lieberman takes on many popular notions, including barefoot running, the paleo diet, epigenetics, and a host of hot topics ranging from obesity and chronic disease to Nanny State politics.”
—Outside

“[Lieberman’s] evolutionary approach produces some counterintuitive surprises. . . . The Story of the Human Body is a reliable guide to a problem that is going to get worse before it gets better.”
—The Guardian

“In thoroughly enjoyable and edifying prose, Lieberman . . . leads a fascinating journey through human evolution. He comprehensively explains how evolutionary forces have shaped the human species as we know it. . . . He balances a historical perspective with a contemporary one . . . while asking how we might control the destiny of our species. He argues persuasively that ‘cultural evolution is now the dominant force of evolutionary change acting on the human body.’”
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Lieberman gracefully combines paleontology, anatomy, physiology, and experimental biomechanics to clarify how the human body has evolved and how evolutionary design now clashes with the particularities of modern society. . . . An important book.”
—Library Journal

“Lieberman holds nothing back. . . . He cleverly and comprehensively points out the perils of possessing Paleolithic anatomy and physiology in a modern world and bemoans ‘just how out of touch we have become with our bodies.’. . . If we want to continue our phenomenal run as a species, it is essential to understand (and embrace) our evolutionary legacy.”
—Booklist

“A massive review of where we came from and what ails us now . . . Would that industry and governments take heed.”

Deep, detailed, wise, and very much worth while
By Dennis Littrell
The first part of the book is about human evolution from apes to Homo sapiens with a lot of interesting information about hominins (AKA hominids) and how we became bipedal and developed language and culture. The second part is about how the rise of agriculture and then the industrial revolution changed the health of our bodies for better and for worse. The third part is about how to cope with what Lieberman calls "mismatch diseases" and "dysevolution."

Lieberman's style is surprisingly readable considering that he has written scores of articles for peer-reviewed journals. There is some repetition (some of it on the same page!) but most of it is didactic because Lieberman is a teacher and he wants us to understand the great environmental and cultural changes that have taken place in the last 50,000 years or so since we became behaviorally modern humans. He is an expert on the human body, especially the head and the feet. Known as "the barefoot professor" at Harvard where he is the head of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, Lieberman is at the pinnacle of his profession and so what he writes about the human body and the environment is highly significant.

To give us as much information as possible, Lieberman begins in Part I with the Australopithecus apes and examines how they got around on two legs as they gradually evolved into the various archaic humans and finally into Homo sapiens. This early part of the book, about one-third of the total, gives the reader a good, contemporary understanding of the various early hominids such as Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo rudolfensis, etc. and how their bodies and habits differed from one another and from Homo sapiens. For example he notes how humans were better at throwing spears and rocks than apes and Neanderthals and how this ability (among other talents) helped humans to survive while the Neanderthal did not.

The beginning of Part II is about the discovery and growth of agriculture and animal husbandry and how that caused an explosion in human populations while bringing about new hardships and diseases. He calls this "The Fruits and Follies of Becoming Farmers." On page 181 he quotes Jared Diamond who claimed that farming was the "worse mistake in the history of the human race." Chapter 9 of Part II examines how the industrial revolution brought about new diseases, hardships, challenges and the beginning of hitherto undreamed of riches for humans and of course the real beginning of the massive pollution that is threatening the planet.

Part III is about chronic disease and other ailments of the modern world and how to cope in an environment radically different from the paleolithic one in which we evolved. It is here that Lieberman elucidates his concept of mismatch disease and dysevolution. The former refers to diseases of too much energy (over eating) and not enough physical activity that leads to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, etc. that is epidemic in developed countries. The latter (dyevolution) is the phenomenon by which we address the symptoms of these chronic ailments instead of the causes thereby perpetuating the diseases.

An important point that Lieberman makes in the introduction and repeats elsewhere is that "many human adaptations did not necessarily evolve to promote physical or mental well-being." They evolved to "promote relative reproductive success (fitness)." (p. 13) On page 167 he expresses it this way: "we sometimes get sick because natural selection favors fertility over health, meaning we didn't necessarily evolve to be healthy." (!) This means that the tendency to get diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes, and even Alzheimer's--diseases that do not reduce reproductive success until it becomes a moot point as we grow older--are mostly not selected against. The evolutionary mechanism that fashioned us simply turns a blind eye to diseases that mainly affect us after the prime reproductive years of our lives.

Another important point is that because humans evolved to be hunter-gatherers we are consequently optimally adapted to the way of life of a hunter-gatherer. This strongly suggests that (and is the main thrust of Lieberman's contention) we are NOT optimally adapted to either life in the big city or life on the farm. It may surprise some readers to learn that humans took a step backward in terms of easy living when we began to rely primarily on farming for subsistence. Lieberman refers to studies that show that not only did the instance of infectious disease increase as we became dependent on farming, but we actually got shorter in stature. We became more subject to a feast and famine way of life that led to more pain and suffering than hunter and gatherers experienced.

Lieberman dismisses several of the explanations for why we became bipedal, such as seeing over tall grasses, freeing our forelimbs for carrying things, etc. He believes that climate change from forested land to savannahs "spurred selection for bipedalism in order to improve early hominins' ability to acquire fallback foods...when fruit was not available." (See the section entitled "Why Be a Biped" in Chapter 2, "Understanding Apes.") "Fallback foods" are roots, tubers, animals like turtles, etc. The salient point is that being bipedal allowed the early apes to cover larger amounts of ground in search of food, whereas tree-dwelling apes could not because knuckle walking is not nearly as efficient as walking upright on two legs.

Among the wealth of insights that Lieberman makes about being human is this one about cooperation. "..[H]unter-gatherers are highly egalitarian and they place great stock in reciprocity.... In their "highly cooperative world...not sharing and being uncooperative can mean the difference between life and death. Group cooperation has probably been fundamental to the hunter-gatherer way of life for more than two million years." (pp. 75-76)

There's a lot of information about nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle choices beginning in Chapter 10 "The Vicious Circle of Too Much." On a point of much contention among nutritionists Lieberman concludes: "Insulin thus makes you fatter, regardless of whether the fat comes from eating carbohydrates or fat." (See the entire argument in the section "How and Why We Are Getting Fatter?")

As a means of fighting the mismatch diseases of obesity, type 2 diabetes, etc. Lieberman introduces in Chapter 13, "The Survival of the Fitter," the idea of "soft paternalism" by which he means governmental intervention to help discourage or tax unhealthy consumption of sodas and other highly processed junk foods. I'm not sure how I feel about this idea but I know many people would oppose it. What Lieberman does not present as a way to lessen human suffering is legal and assisted suicide.

One last quote: "If there is any one most useful lesson to learn from our species' rich and complex evolutionary history, it is that culture does not allow us to transcend our biology." (p. 366)

Solid Science and Strong Arguments

'The Story of the Human Body' is a well-written book tailored for the curious nonscientist who wants to learn more about how our evolutionary history influences the sorts of ailments that we suffer from, particularly those that we often attribute to simple aging. This is a book primarily for the layman - if you've taken a good general life science course as a high school or college student you'll be able to survive the jargon just fine - and it's to author Daniel Lieberman's credit that he was able to write such an engaging, conversation book without overly simplifying the science behind his argument. The science itself is noncontroversial, and Lieberman does a great job distinguishing between the indisputable facts of the fossil record and what we can infer and assume based on our understanding of modern primitive peoples. Lieberman's central argument won't be new to anyone who's studied evolutionary theory and health sciences, but it's probably one that most people have not considered before.

I'm particularly impressed with the last chapter of the book. Most recent science books I've read that are written for a nonprofessional audience tend to either fall apart toward the end or have ridiculous wrapups that have little connection to the text that preceeded it. The last chapter of this book, on the other hand, reads like an extended essay examining the pragmatism of implementing our evolutionary knowledge to many of the potential solutions to improve our health. Truth be told, unless we're going to abandon civilization en masse and return to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, any changes we make to get closer to the lifestyles that our bodies evolved for are going to necessarily be incomplete. But they will be for the better. And while I don't agree with all of Lieberman's arguments, it's difficult to contradict his primary conclusions.

This isn't an overly easy read, and it isn't going to lead to an overnight improvement in your health, but it's well worth the effort you put into reading this book. Set aside a week or so to read it slowly.

Our physiological & cultural evolution since Australopithecus
By William Garrison Jr.
"The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease" by Daniel Lieberman (Oct. 2013), [approx. 370 pages of text, & another 60 pages of notes]. Okay, yes, this is a study of the evolution and development of us: mankind. The author doesn't start by hypothesizing how "man" evolved by some fish deciding to become a beachcomber and then standing upright. He avoids the "early" Darwin picture. Instead, the author fast-forwards his journey by picking up mankind's evolutionary traits "about six million years or so to a forest somewhere in Africa" (p.21).

But where is this journey going to take us? As the author postulates: "We didn't evolve to be healthy, but instead we were selected to have as many offspring as possible under diverse, challenging conditions. As a consequence, we never evolved to make rational choices about what to eat or how to exercise in conditions of abundance and comfort... If we wish to halt this vicious circle [of continuing to pass `bad' genes to our children] then we need to figure out how to respectfully and sensibly nudge, push, and sometimes oblige ourselves to eat foods that promote health...." (p. xii).

No, this is not some health-fanatic's book urging us to eating several wheel-barrels full of veggies every day. The author notes how we differ from our knuckle-dragging ancestors, such as we lost our earlier heavily powerful jaw muscles and bulky jaws as our forefathers began eating meats rather than subsisting totally on nuts, fruits, and tubers.

As the "Look Inside" feature was not available at the time of this review, following are the chapter contents, which really present a very good review of the innards of this book.

(Chpt. 1) Introduction: What are humans adapted for?

(Part I: Apes and Humans) [The author discusses the changes between: Australopiths, Homo habilis, H. rudolphensis, Homo erectus, H. heidelbergensis, H. floresiensis, H. neanderthalenis, and Modern humans.]

(2) Upstanding Apes: How we became bipeds.

(3 ) Much depends on dinner: How the Australopiths partly weaned us off fruit.

(4) The first hunter-gatherers: How nearly modern bodies evolved in the human genus.

(5) Energy in the Ice Age: How we evolved big brains along with large, fat, gradually growing bodies.

(6) A very cultured species: How modern humans colonized the world with a combination of brains plus brawn.

(Pat II: Farming and the Industrial Revolution.)
(7) Progress, mismatch, and dysevolution: The consequences-- good and bad --of having Paleolithic bodies in a post-Paleolithic world. [Cavities begin to appear in the time of the Neolithic farmer.]

(8) Paradise Lost?: The fruits and follies of becoming farmers. ["Humans have unleashed upon ourselves a frightening array of horrid diseases ... that we acquired by living in close contact with animals" (p. 201)]

(9) Modern Times, Modern Bodies: The paradox of human health in the Industrial Era.

(Part III: The Present, the Future)
(10) The Vicious Circle of Too Much: Why too much energy can make us sick.

(11) Disuse: Why we are losing it by not using it.

(12) The hidden dangers of novelty and comfort: Why everyday innovations can damage us.

(13) Survival of the Fitter: Can evolutionary logic help cultivate a better future for the human body?

This is not a book about human physiology: how blood flows throughout or body or how our kidneys work. But it does discuss how we picked up human parasites (lice, pin worms, etc.) and diseases (malaria, yaws, syphilis, etc.). This book isn't just about comparing the brain sizes of our early ancestors with ours; just a few factoids to make this topic interesting. This book is more about how human choices have impacted mankind's lifestyles, such as our increased consumption of sugar-loaded foods and how that impacts upon our insulin receptors, glucose molecules, glucose transporters and insulin-resistant stuff. And discussion about our increasing levels of "triglycerides from excess visceral fat." Yummy!

And the author reviews CT scans of Egyptian mummies to study the development of early LDL and HDL influences in some plaque-plugged veins of the Pharaohs.

The author concludes (in part): "If these is any one most useful lesson to learn from our species' rich and complex evolutionary history, it is that culture does not allow us to transcend our biology ... The human body's past was molded by the survival of the fitter, but your body's future depends on how you use it" (p. 367). This book is an easy, enjoyable read, and a wonderful, very informative look at our evolutionary development.

A must-have for anyone dealing with autoimmune or mood issues, such as celiac, fibromyalgia, RA, depression, eating disorders
By jodyross
If you have been told that it would be better for your health to eliminate sugar and processed foods from your diet due to autoimmune or mood disorders, you too probably felt overwhelmed - I already don’t feel great, and now I have to plan meals, shop and cook? My fun with food is over. I totally get it because I have been dealing with all of these for 25 years. None of the pharmaceutical options worked well for me. Though I had been introduced to managing chronic illness through nutrition, I wasn’t ready until last year when I learned of recent studies showing that the meds the doctors recommended for me can contribute to dementia. Since I had exhausted every other option, I decided to try healing my body with nutrition. Luckily for me, I discovered Anna Vocino’s recipes at the same time. She totally gets it too. Her recipes call for basic ingredients that don’t require a lot of expensive kitchen gadgets or endless hours with multiple steps, just simple, good food that’s easy to prepare and tastes delicious. Seriously, you take a bite of one of these dishes and say to yourself or anyone at the table, oh that is good. If you are dealing with food sensitivities, such as dairy, most of the recipes are easy to adjust.

It’s been almost 11 months of eating this way and here are the results: I’m off all medication for mood, sleep and pain and lost 15 lbs. I thought it would be super boring and way too much work, but Anna’s recipes are so tasty that we have invited friends and family over for dinner more this year more than ever before. The food is too good not to share. Both my husband and 12-year-old daughter (notorious for being a picky eater) love Anna’s recipes, and we are saving money by eating dinners together at home. So, I was wrong. My food life is actually more fun and satisfying. Thank you so much Anna. Do yourself a favor and buy this book!

This is the book for you if you want delicious low carb, gluten free, grain free recipes that are easy to make!

Studies have shown that reducing excess carbohydrates in your diet can help with the following problems:
- Excess Weight
- Fatigue and Sleepiness
- Brain Fog
- Bloating
- Low Blood Sugar
- High Blood Pressure
- High Triglycerides
Modern food processing techniques resulting in 'hidden' sugars and our reliance on processed food in our diet can have the affect of too many carbohydrates in our bodies.

As a way of combating this, NSNG (No Sugars No Grains) was a phrase coined by Fitness Trainer to the stars Vinnie Tortorich who, together with Anna Vocino, the books author, has built a popular podcast and Facebook group.

Anna is very honest about her journey with Celiac disease and having to give up gluten, dairy and sugar. When she started down this path, there weren't a lot of resources for eating this way. This cookbook is the result of many years of developing recipes that addressed her new way of eating. In addition to writing a cookbook and having a top rated podcast, she is a busy wife, mom, actress and comedian who still wants to feed her family.

These recipes are easy to follow, don't use a lot of exotic ingredients, and are geared towards those of us who are busy and have better things to do than spend hours in the kitchen each day.

If you are interested in Gluten Free, Grain Free, Low Carb eating, you owe it to yourself to check this book out. The recipes and DELICIOUS and you won't feel deprived. I've taken several dishes to social gatherings and had rave reviews. No one knew they were eating a gluten/grain free low carb dish.

Brilliant Recipes!!
By Anzura
This cookbook deserves no less than 5 stars....I wish I could give it more!
I've been cooking for a long time. I've also been a cookbook junkie forever and I'm always pinning new recipes to my pintrest board. When I first got this book, I thought the recipes looked pretty basic. I would look at them and thought I could figure out the way it would taste by reading the ingredients. Well, after cooking the first recipe, I was blown away. Then I cooked the 2nd and 3rd and 4th....all of them completely brilliant! Something magical happens when the chosen ingredients are put together, it creates a meal that is worthy of a 5 star restaurant. They taste completely gourmet!
I have wanted to hold off writing a review until I had a lot of the meals cooked. Obviously, it hasn't been out long enough to make them all, but I'm confident enough now to know the rest will all be fantastic.
If you are cutting grains and sugar, finding recipes to keep things interesting can be a challenge, you NEED this book...buy it!!!
Adding a few pictures of some meals I have made.
Update: I've made pretty much every recipe in the book. I love them all!
There are a few reviews that complain about not having nutritional information. When you eat NO sugar and NO grains, you don't need to count calories or carbs. When you cut the crap, the weight will come off without even trying.
