A Better Than Story

Paul Fallon is a fashion advertising guru. He’s a genius at dealing with difficult editors, art directors, and designers alike. He thrives on the chaotic atmosphere and constant challenges. But in his personal life, he’s hoping for peace and stability. Settling down with a nice doctor or lawyer sounds perfect. Anyone but an artist. He’s been there, done that, and he doesn’t want to relive the heartache.

Seth Landau is a model, occasional guitarist, and aspiring painter. He’s quirky, flighty, and wise beyond his years. Life has taught him some tough lessons, then given him opportunities he never dreamed of. He’s learned to appreciate the fragility of life and to express it in his work. Seth’s flare for the absurd combined with a supple mind and a beautiful body are too alluring for Paul to ignore. Against his best intentions, Paul is drawn to the younger man whose particular brand of crazy challenges Paul to accept that things aren’t always as they seem. Sometimes taking a chance is better than being safe.

Readers of Lane Hayes’s Better Than series may remember Paul, the soft-spoken, well-mannered Brit who met Curt for a coffee date just before Curt got with Jack in Better Than Friends. This is Paul’s story. He’s a fashion advertising executive who is a friend of Aaron’s and has the uncanny ability to juggle problems with schedules, art directors, models, photographers, and designers all at the same time.

He’s finally done with a whirlwind of travel commitments and has decided to settle down in DC for a while in the hopes that he can find some stability and perhaps a steady relationship. Unfortunately, matchmaker Aaron finds out and hooks him up with a coffee date with the stunning model Paul was ogling at the last shoot he attended with Aaron. But the date is a bomb, the guy turning out to be a tardy, snarky, wisecracking ass, and Paul wants no part of the young model.

Seth Landau, model, occasional guitarist, and aspiring painter has learned some tough lessons in his young life, and he sees Paul as too stuffy, strait-laced, and unforgiving, with a snobby attitude to boot. Having left his abusive artist boyfriend only six months ago, Seth wants to spread his wings as an artist in his own right, and he’s been weaning himself from the world of modeling so he can focus on his art. In fact, he has a huge art show scheduled at a prestigious gallery in October, and it’s because he’s working furiously on his paintings that he was late for the coffee date with Paul. Paul’s snobby attitude rubbed him the wrong way, so he decided not to bother explaining and added his own bit of snark to the meeting.

But when they accidentally meet up on a train to Baltimore a few days later, they find that they do indeed have more in common than they initially thought, and after Paul’s work there is complete, he seeks the bar where Seth is playing guitar with his friend’s band. One thing leads to another, and the men end up in bed for an unforgettable night of steamy sex. But when Seth fails to contact Paul after repeated attempts from Paul to call and text him, Paul decides that’s it. His former lover in the UK was also an artist, as is his father, so Paul’s first instinct to avoid artists is what he’s going to stick with now.

Of course, that doesn’t happen. The quirky, fun-loving, youthful Seth manages to worm his way back into Paul’s life and ultimately into his heart. These two have a push-pull relationship right from the beginning of the story and almost all the way to the end. So much so, that I often felt like I was watching a tennis match! But as a reader, I couldn’t get attached to either man, and I believe it was because of this antagonistic behavior. Their relationship dynamic was not warm and loving, it was conflicting and heated and argumentative. The villain of the story the ex-boyfriend of both men!threw an even bigger monkey wrench into the possibility of them ever having a happy ever after.

I normally devour the books in this series in virtually one sitting, however with this one, I couldn’t get connected, and I kept putting it down, walking away, then coming back like a fly to a spiderweb. It may be that both of them had an abrasive side to their personality that the author brought to the forefront consciously or subconsciously, I honestly don’t know. I do know that I started to really like Seth many times, but he’d fail to show up or contact Paul and my connection to him would sputter out. I found Paul more difficult to like, though his personality and back story actually should have endeared him to me. It just didn’t happen, and I’m very disappointed.

I’d recommend this to all who follow the series because we should all form our own opinions, and some readers may love these characters. I’d also recommend the book to those who enjoy age gap stories, since Paul was eleven years older than Seth, and to those who like a lot of angst and conflict in their M/M romances. I’m hoping for at least one more installment to this series, though. I do love this author’s writing style. Hmm, maybe someone will come along to mellow out that nasty villain, Simon? Or that sexy doctor Paul met online? Here’s hoping.

Another great book

This series is great, loved the first three books and this one too! We met Paul in book 3, he dated Curt and it didn’t work out so well. Paul is a fashion designer who used to travel the world but now he is staying in the US for a while. Seth is a model, painter and loves to play guitar. These two have instant sparks but Seth comes off as a jerk when they meet for coffee. Still strangely attracted to each other they start off as friends even against Paul’s better judgment. These two go through so many ups and downs at times it was frustrating and you wanted to scream at them. Another great addition to the series and it was great seeing characters from previous books again.

Paul spots beautiful model Seth
By Tracy Muth ~Bayou Book Junkie
While visiting Aaron at a magazine fashion shoot, Paul spots beautiful model Seth, who he finds staring back at him from across the room. Paul is drawn to the young man, and he and Seth meet again when they are set up on a coffee date by Aaron. This doesn't go so well. In fact it's probably the worst coffee date in the history of coffee dates, but they'll get their chance again.

I'll be honest, I LOVED Seth, and his character made this book a 5 star read for me. I wish the book had been in his POV. I would have loved to get into his head. He was so flaky and flighty, but sometimes you are just drawn to a character, and I was definitely drawn to Seth. He had a very interesting and intriguing backstory I would have loved to get a closer look at. Paul, well, I thought Paul was a snobby, British tosser. I didn't like him throughout most of the book. I found his character too prim and proper for my taste. I just wanted him to loosen up a little. Does the man not own a pair of jeans and a t-shirt for crying out loud?!?! But I felt for him. His story is one of privilege, yet neglect and mental abuse and anguish. While I didn't love Paul from the beginning, I loved the story. It was well written and captivating. It flowed well and moved at a good pace. The characters are well developed and I absolutely loved the growth they showed throughout the story.

The chemistry was good between the characters. The sexual tension palpable and the sex was beyond smoking hot!! On a side note, I read this book after I read "A Kind of Truth", which is a new series, and features Seth's friend, Rand's story in book one. While scenes with Rand were few and far between, I loved getting a peek at Rand (my favorite of all of Lane's characters), before he becomes an established character.

This was an enjoyable story, that I highly recommend!
